Kids can’t learn if they are hungry. Meals should be provided for all students , free from stigma.

I agree but I never seen this growing up (millennial). The people who got free breakfast and lunch they qualified and got it.

They rest of us had food.

The times have changed with inflation is my guess.

My household made more than enough money to feed myself and my two siblings.

I still went hungry due to neglect and abuse. Sometimes I would ask other kids for the food they didn't want at lunch, like carrots or a milk box. They made fun of me to my face and among themselves but I didn't care, I wanted the calories.

I still would have suffered in school, but I would have learned and accomplished more without the hunger. All I wanted was to get home at three pm and eat as much as I could for 'breakfast.'

These programs are just humane and I am so thankful that even one kid will be helped by them. But I know it will be more.

I wish I could just give you a hug dude. I am proud of you for surviving that and having an empathetic spirit for others. It reminds me of a quote: “no one will understand the violence it took for me to be this gentle.”

I saw this growing up in the ''80s-'90s, including being eligible myself. We hid it because we were so embarrassed. Sometimes your experience doesn't reflect reality.

Kids who got free lunch some of them did get made fun of. Kids will be kids just like kids still get bullied today sadly. I don't understand your comment, they still got free lunch.

The idea is to reduce harm. You know how every time there's a school shooting, we collectively refuse to do anything about the availability of weapons because we prefer to tell ourselves the violence is a result of poor mental health? Well, bullying is one of those things that damages the mental health of children.

I just had to try to convince someone that it's good to feed children. That might be a new low. Oh well, this is America.

Ridiculous that there’s even anyone out there that might be against free lunch for kids.

You want to know how when you state something out of context how it’s inaccurate? Touch a nerve? No. Although I don’t agree with people who twist words and create false constructs, I support their 1st Amendment right to do so.

Gas light much? How was that not a response. You make an accusation while providing nothing to back it up. You’re called out on it and respond with me having no response? And you call me a troll? 😂😂😂😂😂

Awesome, I love it when economies of scale are utilized for the good of all.

The added productivity of parents not having to pack lunches probably covers the cost anyhow.

FJCruisin t1_j9kziqe wrote

My kids still pack their own lunch, as they report the school lunch is horrible and doesnt even come close to being enough food. Although they've yet to prove that to me by sending me pictures of the lunch the school is offering. I'm sure this varies heavily from town to town.

My daughter is in elementary school and gets breakfast most days and lunch everyday. They seem like standard school lunches from my childhood - chicken patty sandwiches, pizza on fridays, tacos, and such. If they don’t like it there is a “fun lunch” which is usually like pb&j, a muffin or something else more plain.

There were some folks from our local high school who did a presentation for our parent group and they said the kids are always hungry, school lunch or not. Just the amount of time they may go, how short lunch breaks are, how lots skip breakfast and growing bodies. I’m sure it’s hard to keep them well fed, but wonder if the schools need to be more lenient about snacks or something.

I agree its a good thing for the greater community. My wife and I don't have or plan to have kids but still support this. I just hope its decent quality and not some Fyre festival cheese sandwich type menu.

I grew up eligible for and on free lunch. I think lunches should be free for all. The stigma around it and all of the lunch debt shame stuff is horrible.

That said, my entitled ass foodie kids hated when lunch went free and were happy when it went to paid again because the quality and selection was much worse. They brought lunch from home almost exclusively when the lunches were free.

FJCruisin t1_j9kzart wrote

Thats the thing. I'd rather pay for my kids to have a lunch with enough food to support a growing teenager. My kids report that the lunch portion is ridiculously small and what there is is horrible. Maybe an option to pay for a 2nd portion?

Maybe we should require adults to get a license to have children since they're so irresponsible 😅 if adults can't be bothered to actually care for their spawn let's discourage reckless reproduction

EarthExile t1_j9ogsat wrote

We try. But the churchies and Republicans actively campaign FOR reckless reproduction, and unfortunately a lot of people agree with them.

So do any of you actually have kids? Cause this free lunch program isn’t exactly just that. In order to actually receive the free lunch you must fill out an application to do so, even if you already receive free lunch through any state supplement program, you still need to fill the form out or you will not be eligible. Also this will be adding several more families to the snap program as it states that they will evaluate each submitted form and then determine if you can receive additional SNAP benefits even if you never qualified for SNAP before. The one thing this email Gail to tell parents is an important one….SNAP may be recovered by the state, paid back in full if family comes into an inheritance or large sum of money, lotto etc. I was on snap for a couple and year cause I was struggling and then a friend told me about this so I called and asked if this was true and the SNAP customer assistance confirmed this. I received around 5,000 a year in SNAp benefits at the time, I dropped the program immediately as I didn’t want to be on the hook for paying back the state for assistance. This is a very important piece of information that this letter has left out.

I have 3 kids. According to the email we received for Region 10, we just have to make sure the lunch accounts are funded and kept in the positive until 3/1, then they get 1 breakfast and 1 lunch per day. Didn't see anything about an application. (I might have missed it. I'll double check.)

Aves44 OP t1_jachm3m wrote

This was the case prior to 3/1. As of 3/1 all children can receive 1 breakfast and lunch for free. THere is no form to fill out.
