We bought in 2008. We had two incomes but not great ones, and were also paying to keep an apartment in upstate NY for husbands job. We got a fixer upper. Both of us had plenty of student loans. I was 26, he was 31, so not nearly decades. No financial aid from family, but they did contribute skills towards fixing it up.

We did the small old house that needed work in a good neighborhood. Been here 15 years and plan on staying.

My daughter is in elementary school and gets breakfast most days and lunch everyday. They seem like standard school lunches from my childhood - chicken patty sandwiches, pizza on fridays, tacos, and such. If they don’t like it there is a “fun lunch” which is usually like pb&j, a muffin or something else more plain.

There were some folks from our local high school who did a presentation for our parent group and they said the kids are always hungry, school lunch or not. Just the amount of time they may go, how short lunch breaks are, how lots skip breakfast and growing bodies. I’m sure it’s hard to keep them well fed, but wonder if the schools need to be more lenient about snacks or something.

It’s not just expense. How are you going to feel when 10ft of your front yard is now gone? For some areas that’s no big deal, but in a neighborhood like mine that’s literally like 10% of my property. It would be a massive battle for a lot of places, eminent domain or no.

That said, I live in a very walkable and pretty bikeable area except for the giant stroad nearby. Not everyone is so lucky though.

My first time canoeing on the river we could see the boat launch to get back home but fighting the current and boat traffic it took forever. We nearly exhausted ourselves trying to go a few hundred yards upstream (I was a teenager, don’t be cruel). Definitely learned the river was not to be messed with that day.

Nomads would be my suggestion for games and fun, but you might save some $ on renting a game trailer and hosting at home, depending on number of kids. It might keep them all more together vs doing their own thing too.

A lot of the drive thru coffee places will be open this morning for travelers. Cumbys will be open for a while and they have more options you could take home later. I believe Applebees are usually open on Christmas, but I’ll second someone else - put on some music or your favorite podcast, drive to Great Taste in New Britain. It’ll be warm and both the food and service is good.

Take care of yourself friend!!!

Slightly older mom of 2 in Hartford county. I made some friends through a parent leadership program my town does (https://pep.extension.uconn.edu/#). I also made some friendships once I started volunteering with a group.

It’s really hard, but getting involved in stuff locally has helped me connect to others. I’m pretty shy, so having something to DO while I interact helps. You & your partner may need to trade off childcare, but some groups do offer it. You could also help create childcare at a group your passionate about.

We took our Girl Scout troop to the local volunteer ambulance association for a tour. They had a female EMT and female paramedic do the tour. Although neither explicitly said it, they seemed to hint there was some sexism in the field. They did a great job of telling the girls to follow their dreams despite what others say.

Cross endorsement mean 3rd parties can have representation without running their own candidates. For example - working families is a more progressive party. They occasionally run their own candidates but not being endorsed by them tells me maybe the democrat candidate may need me to look closer to see if they align with my values.

It also tells candidates hey this thing is important, look at that whole 2%.

Ok. Maybe less that last part but the potential is there!
