Sometimes when I'm doing something physically demanding, I say to myself, "Well at least I'm not climbing Half Dome." It's a beautiful hike, but the distance plus starting the hike ~3am is exhausting. Some things on your bucket list should only be crossed off once.

Nice photo! How did you shoot it?

During this same trip, my wife and I "accidentally" climbed Upper Yosemite falls. I swear I thought AllTrails said moderate and not hard.

Pro: beautiful sunset photo from Columbia Rock

Con: we were still above the treeline at sunset 😅

Lovely time to visit tbh. The west, southwest, and south entrances are open. Only Tioga Rd - continuation of Hwy 120 to east exit - is closed. The valley is open year round - so lots of things to do still! In this same trip, we hiked Upper Yosemite falls, Mirror Lake, and Tuolumne Grove (of sequoias).

Glacier Point Rd is closed to private cars in winter BUT you can take the shuttle bus up. It turns into some sort of ski resort that time of year. I still have skiing in Glacier Point in my bucket list.

I love the Merced. I did a 27 mile trip starting in Toulumne and ending in the Valley. Absolutely spectacular. Once you get out of the touristy areas, the park feels glorious. How close to little Yosemite campground is this? I'm assuming this is near the top of Nevada falls coming up the JMT?

That sounds like quite the trip! Got photos to share?

This was taken on the Sentinel Drive bridge connecting Southside and Northside Drives. Super easy to get to!

Nice experience though! I was able to do mist trail up Vernal Fall in three different seasons: spring with my mom, summer with my brother, and autumn with my wife.

I remember still using a non-weatherproof Fujifilm camera during my first two trips and being worried more than half the time. Still would gladly do it again.

I love how reflective and clear the water is in Yosemite.

Can I ask questions? Tryna get my half dome on later this year.

  1. If I enter the lotto for 3-4 days later in the year, is there any indication how likely I am to get a spot?

  2. Does speed of entry on the lotto change anything? Like first come first serve?

  3. Where did you stay?

  4. If you can't stay very near, is there ample parking near any sort of trailheads to get started on the trail?

Beautiful! It’s one of my favourite places on earth. So quiet and peaceful in the winter.

I hiked in 2018, so verify all this:

  1. You're talking about the week of lotto? I'm not sure because I was able to get permits. There was a chart online with how likely you were to get a spot based on specific days.

  2. Probably not totally advised, but on the day I hiked, the marshall wasn't checking permits at the cables (maybe they showed up later in the day)

  3. Crane Flat campground

  4. Yeah, lots of parking at the trailhead because you'll be starting in the early hours of the morning before the tourists arrive.

Bring gloves for the cables!

One April, a buddy and I X-country skied Glacier Pt. Rd. from Badger Pass all the way to Glacier Pt. That was a cool trip. We camped overnight at Glacier Pt. and skied back the next morning.

Some real X-country skiers were going out and back in like 2 hours.
