Since I saw my first aurora some years ago I‘m almost addicted to them. I love watching the nerdy statistics and graphs on the forecast websites and rush out in the cold when the heavens seem to blow up on a clear night. 😍

I recently went to see them. Awesome. But honestly, the pictures are often times better because the exposure times can be tweaked and are more sensitive than the human eye. Don't get me wrong, the lights are beautiful, but I was also shocked how even my cell phone picked up the lights more dramatically than my eyes.

Beautiful. I got married in Budir last year at the black church. I can’t wait to return again, hopefully to see the auroras.

Is the winter the best time to see them? I assume so with like 20 hours of darkness but everything else there must be pretty inhospitable this time of year

Basically all year but is only gets dark enough from late august till April. The more „night“ the longer the chances. To see the green lady. Also I prefer to go there during a new-moon phase :-)

Yeah, it was a great night. Basically I also have the same shot with a totally different type of aurora, maybe I’ll post it some day. Not so much swirls but way more „straight lines“ with lots of colors.

True, but to be honest: if you are under clear skies when an bigger solar wind hits earth it’s even more magic than on any photo or video because the sky is just dancing all above you. It’s truly magical, but also I was lucky enough two times to be on Iceland or in Norway when a big solar storm hits our atmosphere 🙂

If you ever go after them, just be prepared for mild disappointment, cause in reality you'll see nothing close to this kind of pictures.

Not true. If there’s an heavy solar storm it’s a pretty stunning show that will blow your mind. But yes- lots of luck needed.

September should be nice, still warm but auroras possible to see. I’ll spontaneously booked a flight in a week hopefully I’ll see some auroras 😇

Chances of whiteouts and blizzards but also sunny days and winter-wonderland. Absolutely unpredictable weather but I love the forced „relaxation“ in a hut with a hot tub.

That’s in Spitzbergen for example, to my knowledge it never gets dark 24/7 in Iceland.

Just double checked it - you see the sun at least 3hrs in winter. It’s very low to the ground but that’s still better than a nothing.
