Unless it makes the sandwich, why would I need to talk to it?

It can answer questions about the ingredients although it would probably be easier to just put that on a sticker I guess.

So it can tell us what it's not-bread actually is?

Hint: mostly sugar (which is why it's not legally bread)

can it also give me love advice and does it respond to the name Brendan?

Companionship. Current vending machines are so emotionally cold.

Noting says "Fresh" like a dispenser fridge.

"Subway eat..." Fresh?, Weeks Old? How knows how old?

I love the writing on the machine: "Subs Made Fresh Daily"

tranquilrage24 t1_iwmqe2a wrote

it’s pretty common for food made daily to be in dispensers nowadays, if anything goes unsold they either throw it out or give it away like an in person restaurant

7

AmIHigh t1_iwnilpr wrote

If the dispenser is smart, it could even begin discounting the food as it gets older through the day to encourage purchases.

tranquilrage24 t1_iwnjxor wrote

i think this is a good idea, we should get you into the next board meeting

That made me curious what was out there and my first result was Coca Cola using a smart machine for evil purposes instead of good.

>In 1999, the Coca-Cola Company tested vending machines that would automatically charge higher prices for cold beverages when the temperature got hotter. According to The New York Times, the variable pricing vending machines were outfitted with a heat-sensor and a computer chip.

plopseven t1_iwpez22 wrote

Put ice cube on sensor - receive infinite cola as machine interprets nuclear winter economy and makes you CEO of Coca Cola for $1.

tranquilrage24 t1_iwnlzri wrote

seems counter intuitive to charge more for warmer drinks but coca cola are geniuses of marketing so who am i to say

As the sandwiches age we should raise prices due to added "flavor"

reminds me of when I was in high school. Subway and Pizza Hut sold food there. Premade sandwiches. TBH they were fine, better than standard school food anyway.

5

checker280 t1_iwmpm97 wrote

They make them fresh daily… you just don’t get to buy them right away.

3

kronicfeld t1_iwnc4nf wrote

It can't be appreciably worse than what they sell in-store.

It's just a vending machine with more parts to break.

If the Thrillist article isn't a paid advertisement, I'll eat my shoe, because it will taste better than anything I can get at Subway.

If OP is not getting paid by Subway then shame on you. Don't work for free.

Gagarin1961 t1_iwms83y wrote

Are vending machines typically known for breaking down? Increased complexity in an established system is fine.

I’ve been expecting shoveling like this for a decade, but my bet was on McDonalds being the first mover. Subway makes sense, though. They are the number one fast food chain.

lofgren777 t1_iwmu7uh wrote

"Are vending machines typically known for breaking down?"

You can't possibly be serious with this.

Increased complexity in an established system is fine if it conveys advantages. If it doesn't it's just one more thing to go wrong. These seem shortsighted to me. I doubt they will replace actual sandwich shops. They will appear in the same places that vending machines already appear and serve the same purpose, and they will be broken most of the time, just like current vending machines.

Gagarin1961 t1_iwmv96s wrote

What?! Vending machines are broken most of the time?! No they’re not…

1

lofgren777 t1_iwmw9cx wrote

Maybe YOU know some reliable ones, but vending machines are more famous for breaking down than for delivering food. The other thing they're famous for is delivering shitty food. Maybe some company someday will change that, but probably not Subway.

I definitely do not put money into a vending machine unless I am OK with losing it.

Compared to? They're the only fast food chain with more than two vegetables on a sandwich worth eating, and it goes from 2 to like 10.

Edit: Major fast food chain, that you consistently get everywhere.

2

DrPoppyCock t1_iwnf2l7 wrote

I would pick any local pizza shop or deli over subway.

2

BrawndoOhnaka t1_iwnjeib wrote

Oh, I can definitely see that in a decent town. Unfortunately most places I've lived the local pizza places were garbo. Definitely take a good deli, but they're much less populous than Subways. Some places are just terrible for food and Subways are literally everywhere in multiple instances.

If machines like this are cost effective and become popular, it will likely have an impact on entry level jobs. A lot of so-called "unskilled" jobs face this threat, but is such a change sustainable for society?

Absolutely love the idea of this, especially in gas stations.

It would be really easy for a gas station employee to fill them whenever an alarm goes off etc and it would make it way more viable for them to be basically everywhere.

Great innovation!
