If machines like this are cost effective and become popular, it will likely have an impact on entry level jobs. A lot of so-called "unskilled" jobs face this threat, but is such a change sustainable for society?

Unless it makes the sandwich, why would I need to talk to it?

Noting says "Fresh" like a dispenser fridge.

"Subway eat..." Fresh?, Weeks Old? How knows how old?

I love the writing on the machine: "Subs Made Fresh Daily"

It's just a vending machine with more parts to break.

If the Thrillist article isn't a paid advertisement, I'll eat my shoe, because it will taste better than anything I can get at Subway.

If OP is not getting paid by Subway then shame on you. Don't work for free.

Subway needs to give one of these to Kronii so she stops eating five day old sandwiches.

My workplace had a vending machine with sandwiches 15 years ago… Not sure how this is any different.

I had a robot called "My Pal" in 1990 that talked to me. And vending machines have been around for ages. What's new here?

Are vending machines typically known for breaking down? Increased complexity in an established system is fine.

I’ve been expecting shoveling like this for a decade, but my bet was on McDonalds being the first mover. Subway makes sense, though. They are the number one fast food chain.

You can't possibly be serious with this.

Increased complexity in an established system is fine if it conveys advantages. If it doesn't it's just one more thing to go wrong. These seem shortsighted to me. I doubt they will replace actual sandwich shops. They will appear in the same places that vending machines already appear and serve the same purpose, and they will be broken most of the time, just like current vending machines.

Maybe YOU know some reliable ones, but vending machines are more famous for breaking down than for delivering food. The other thing they're famous for is delivering shitty food. Maybe some company someday will change that, but probably not Subway.

I definitely do not put money into a vending machine unless I am OK with losing it.

Someone’s still gotta restock it so maybe not too many jobs will be lost. Hopefully there’s no power outage though

Compared to? They're the only fast food chain with more than two vegetables on a sandwich worth eating, and it goes from 2 to like 10.

Edit: Major fast food chain, that you consistently get everywhere.

Oh, I can definitely see that in a decent town. Unfortunately most places I've lived the local pizza places were garbo. Definitely take a good deli, but they're much less populous than Subways. Some places are just terrible for food and Subways are literally everywhere in multiple instances.

That made me curious what was out there and my first result was Coca Cola using a smart machine for evil purposes instead of good.

>In 1999, the Coca-Cola Company tested vending machines that would automatically charge higher prices for cold beverages when the temperature got hotter. According to The New York Times, the variable pricing vending machines were outfitted with a heat-sensor and a computer chip.

I'm not normally a vandal, but if a vending machine started talking to me and I had a sledgehammer available, the temptation would be great

I could see it as a positive if you can just talk to it so it doesn’t require you to touch the machine. Otherwise, useless.

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA

Absolutely love the idea of this, especially in gas stations.

It would be really easy for a gas station employee to fill them whenever an alarm goes off etc and it would make it way more viable for them to be basically everywhere.

Great innovation!
