I was thinking the same thing lol. Why not make a driving game based off this or something similar?

Loggerdon t1_ixevhsx wrote

Magicians Penn and Teller invented a video game that is "The most boring video game in the world". It's simply driving straight ahead for 24 hours. They did it just as a goof.

And the bus pulls to one side constantly while you’re driving, so you actually have to pay attention

This is just guessing but you probably have to pay Google a shit ton of money to use the map data commercially unless you are

A) Google, where the project will be killed 6 months after release

B) Capable of creating your own street view data of the entire globe.

Only Microsoft has come close and did just that with Flight Sim.

CertainWorldliness t1_ixgjhy3 wrote

That new flight simulator world combines the data with AI landscape generation and its absolutely sick… from the sky at least. Get a little closer to the ground and you’ll see an upside down house here and there.

Absolutely mind blowing tech. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

I don't know much about planes, but aren't they generally supposed to be in the sky?

Geoguessr uses Street View data, but yes, there's API fees...

They use Bing data though, not Google

Wasn't there a version of SimCity that did this?

3

clarky9712 t1_ixhm41j wrote

Sim city 4, with the expansion allowed you to drive cars.

Sim copter too iirc

5

drekwithoutpolitics t1_ixhywqt wrote

SimCity 2000 had an expansion called Streets of SimCity. SimCopter was before it, which I had. It was so fun!

The graphics were quite bad I thought, even in 1996. But I still had a blast.

I've always thought a game of, say the Gumball Ralley, played using google maps to generate routes and traffic in realtime would fly.

Imagine a run from New York to LA in real time against real traffic reports

tapespeedselector t1_ixgvpf3 wrote

One time I set up my stationary bike in front of the TV, fired up GTA V. Found a road bike and set the camera to first person and just cruised around town while actually pedaling irl. It was pretty awesome actually, I just couldn't figure out how to comfortably hold the controller

23

RossTheNinja t1_ixgyvz4 wrote

GTA bike let's you do this with a bike trainer. You can still shoot people of you bring a controller as well.

14

wlowry77 t1_ixhdjz8 wrote

You want VZFIT.

Lybychick t1_ixhjlkj wrote

Not interested in expensive exercise apps … I just want something motivating to watch while I peddle in place.

3

wlowry77 t1_ixhl9av wrote

Fair enough. It’s worth mentioning that the cost of using street view is part of the reason for the price of VzFit.

6

uncentio t1_ixhigfm wrote

Strap a 360⁰ camera to your helmet and ride your bike through your town, then watch it while you stationary cycle at home. You can do the same thing with your favorite stores, parks, even your friends' and family's homes. You'll never have to leave your home again.

Lybychick t1_ixhjapr wrote

I’d have to hire a teenager to wear a GoPro and ride through town … too many hills and it’s 20* out there right now.

3

pkoya1 t1_ixhjenw wrote

You can do this with an app and a cadence sensor (inexpensive). I forgot the app name I will update you if I remember. If you have a vr headset the app works with that too.

4

Lybychick t1_ixhk2lp wrote

VR headsets make me want to puke … disconnect between eyes and ears is too disorienting. Brain is an old model and ineligible for updates.

Coordinating an app and the bike is more functionality than I need. I may experiment with YouTube videos and play speed.

Who made this? I've been wanting to make a game like this, but essentially just using google maps as a Virtual Tabletop for RPGs. Imagine this but you can just place figurines around on maps (3d view would be better), have a grid, and measuring tool.

I thought the google maps API wasn't allowing people to use maps like this anymore!

That being said... this is kind of lame. You can drive anywhere, through trees, on top of buildings, over cliffs, across water... it's just a way to fly over a map using a car or bus as a floating not-quite-center point. Good concept, poor execution.
