I myself was once a person who did not understand this. It did take hearing the explanations and linking those to my own experiences to get it. Growing up with narcissistic parents teaches you narcissistic behavior and maladaptive core beliefs, and so believe it or not, being a narcissistic 20something is traveling a difficult road -- it takes many villagers and bumpy lessons to navigate to better lands.

I had a similar experience in my 20s, then one day the thought of "the people telling you these things care about you and wouldn't make this up to hurt you" popped into my mind and it was a huge turning point.
"Consider the source" has a negative connotation usually, but really works both ways.
