But I'm allowed since I take her shopping every week.

ETA: purely out of curiosity, what were the ages of these two people?

I had a similar experience in my 20s, then one day the thought of "the people telling you these things care about you and wouldn't make this up to hurt you" popped into my mind and it was a huge turning point.

"Consider the source" has a negative connotation usually, but really works both ways.

I tend to agree even as someone who loves the idea. If people would keep it fun instead of mean it would be different.

I've done a few successful April fool's gags at work but you have to be careful.

Last year I parted my hair on the other side and played dumb when coworkers asked why I looked different. Only 2 figured it out until I finally "revealed" it to the office gossip and it spread around the office around the end of the day. If it doesn't require clean up or interrupt the day in general, you're probably good.
