A great many places don't let you set up those using banking information, though.
I moved from checking to credit specifically because I didn’t want someone gaining direct access to my checking account. It doesn’t have anywhere near the checks and balances or alerts that my credit card does. And if the credit company detects an anomaly, they ship me a new card number the next day. Easier than migrating everything over to a new checking account number, and more secure.
The reason you don’t see the checking account number compromised is that people don’t give it out.
You should refrain from using any payment method that has direct access to your checking accounts as much as possible. Avoid giving out your debit card info or your account numbers. It’s always credit cards for me, or an alternate checking account which receives transfers of only the required amounts monthly.
I think another key point - debit cards expire. Checking accounts don't. So if you set up all your automatic payments thru your checking account you don't have to worry about going thru and changing your card info. You don't realize how many payments you might have - it's a pain in the ass. mortgages, car payments, health - car - life insurance. credit card payments. and on and on.. my debit card expired once and it was a nightmare. forgot to change some of them and things got shut off and went on my credit.. totally just forgot about it
That isn't how this works. Either you set up the automatic payment using a debit card, a credit card or via ach. Not all billers allow all options.
Also fraud on a debit card doesn't mean redoing all of your payments. In fact visa and mastercard have programs where they share the replacement card number with your recurring billers.
Fraud on a checking account is WAY harder to deal with than a debit card. Only use your bank account for ach when absolutely necessary, and with very reputable companies.
Bases on your professional experience. How compromised are Utilities companies?? Gas, water, electric companies.
What about internet providers and cell service providers? Xfinity, Verizon, AT&T, etc.
