Democrats in Maine are working hard to expand reproductive rights and protect healthcare providers. Right now, abortion is legal for up to 24 weeks. After viability abortion, is legal only if the mother’s life is in danger or if the pregnancy is no longer viable. Maine’s Governor Janet Mill aims to expand abortion services after 24 weeks.

Maine is on the right path toward protecting reproductive rights for all, and they still need your help. To support Pro-Choice organizations in Maine consider making a tax-deductible donation to the following organizations:

Maine’s Women Lobby - https://www.mainewomen.org

This organization specifically focuses on passing laws that support and uphold women’s rights.

Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights - https://grandmothersforreproductiverights.org

Mabel Wadsworth Center - https://www.mabelwadsworth.org/donate/

Why is killing a baby after viability when it is not threatening the mother's life a good thing? Most Americans support the right to early abortion but do not support mid to late term abortion. Abortion after viability is wrong.

24 weeks is quite generous, I think this is fine and fair. I also think the mother being in danger afterwards is fair reasoning for a later term abortion.

Why do you guys wanna abort at such late stages unless it's necessary? (Honest question) I just don't get it. At the same time, I don't think I'd ever opt for an abortion myself, but you do you its harms me 0%

Expand it beyond viability? Why not just go all the way to when the water has already broken like many democrats want?

Because the baby isn't viable, but isn't threating the mother. If you made it that long in this state especially, it's a wanted pregnancy. So you go to an appointment and the doctor tells you that if your baby was to manage to survive birth than it would suffocate and die right after. The doctor recommends terminating the pregnancy but you're after the 24 week mark and they can't do anything about it. Now you get to either spend the rest of your pregnancy dealing with the fact that you are carrying a baby that will die horribly (which is pretty messed up) or if you're lucky enough you can afford to make a trip to another state. This bill would change that and allow the doctor in Maine and the patient to make that call without government interference.

Are there specific bills this session to write legislators about?

Sometimes mothers find out after the 24 week mark that the baby has issues incompatible with life. So if you get that horrible news, in this state it's either try to carry the pregnancy to term (maybe risking your own health) or travel to another state at great expense. Changing the law allows for Maine doctor's and the mother to make the best choice.

One of my good friends found out that their baby had suffered a serious issue and was no longer going to live at just past 4 months. She was heartbroken- had a name picked out, working on a nursery, planning a shower. She had to have an abortion despite the baby being very much wanted because it was not capable of living outside of the womb. It was incredibly tough for her- I cannot imagine how much harder it would be if she had to wait to actually deliver or wait for the fetus to start making her seriously ill before getting medical health. I feel like people who oppose late term abortion do not understand much about how pregnancy works.

It’s only ever done in extreme situations where the baby would not survive or be at considerable risk for the mother. There was a woman who had to travel out of Maine to NY to get these services because her baby didn’t have a skull. It’s a medical procedure for unfortunate things that sometimes happen in pregnancy. It’s not just cause someone is like “oh, wait, nevermind!” at that stage. If you are actually asking in good faith and not just antagonizing people.

You've got to be a pretty sick "doctor" to suck a baby out of it's mother's womb through a tube. We care more about a straw when it's stuck in a sea turtle's nose that when it's used to tear a baby apart limb by limb. Our society is sick and evil.

Hide yourself from the reality of what these procedures actually look like. Talk about closed minded. Im all for a woman's right to choose but how far is too far? Abortion as contraception is too much for me personally. Close them legs ladies! Your value is more than a quick lay! Teach your daughters to value their purity folks.

I'm too broke to donate, but whatever else we can do, you guys have my support!

Even if it's just balancing out the horrific, ignorant comments in this thread, good lord. I sure hope these are just out-of-state trolls because, c'mon Mainers, we're better than this.

I think you asked and worded this question superbly. I don't think you were being malicious in any sense of the word. Hate that you were downvoted for asking why people support a certain thing.. Civil discourse should always be a priority when discussing sensitive subjects like this. Idk just my thoughts. Really not trying to upset anyone by saying that

Mother's business to kill a 7 month old life. The life that could be delivered via c section the same day as being murdered by late term abortion because a Dr says the medical reason for abortion is mom's depression. Some people stand up for the defenseless and innocent, the ones who don't are called liberals.

"The unborn are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."

  1. The fact you have to say "the vast majority" isn't a good thing. Especially when you have democrats on camera saying they want to get pregnant just to get an abortion.

  2. That comparison doesn't work as the eggs we cook don't contain chicks. They're unfertilized. For someone calling someone else a moron you sure seem to be lacking in basic knowledge.

I think it's also ok if the parents are no longer together. I heard of a female celebrity who got pregnant, and was originally going to keep the pregnancy and raise the hypothetical child with her boyfriend together, but then he cheated on her and they broke up.

It's better to have an abortion than to raise a child in a split up family.

No one should have to donate any body part in order to keep another alive.

If Kacsmaryk bans mifepristone, which when taken in combination with misoprostol is the safest form of abortion, we should not feel compelled to follow any American law. The laws of Maine are more than enough to ensure a successful society.

So all for body positivity until you need a negative point? Also less educated? If you mean college then I hate to tell you but in many cases it's more or less useless. Also not sure what listening to classical music has to do with anything. As for traveling abroad if you're looking down on people for not doing that you're an elitist.

A fertilized ovum isn't a human being you numbnuts. And you're categorically insane if you think people want to get pregnant just to get abortions.
And I guarantee plenty of fertilized chicken eggs get cooked, and guess what? They're not chickens.

The bottom line is that there are plenty of good reasons to get an abortion, whether medical, social, or psychological.

So, keep your medieval irrational beliefs to yourself.

This is way off topic for this post, but I wanted to comment that the body positivity movement is about acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, and physical abilities, while challenging present-day beauty standards as an undesirable social construct. While most people are capable of having a healthy body through healthy diet and exercise, there are still many people trapped in a larger body due to various conditions and illnesses. Body positivity is just a matter of accepting and respecting other humans, no matter what they look like. It’s just common decency. There are other movements out there that try to glamorize obesity and say it’s healthy, but I think it’s typical of any movement for people to twist things to the extreme.
