I'm afraid to ask, but how much? I have 2 completely unused fireplaces aching for an insert.

Guygan OP t1_j1ate0s wrote

About $6k installed.

Worth every penny honestly.

I know, oh I know. It's just, $6k is a big chunk. Plus whatever chimney lining or whatever.
The first place would be the basement, where my office is. Has a short section of baseboard heat, but NO insulation at all, and it's cold down there. I figure the heat would work its way up, and I'd have a warm basement to build a bar in.

$6k included the chimney liner. It’s just a 3” stainless flex pipe that goes up to the flue cap.

I bought a used Quadrafire 1200i and love it. Mine is in the basement family room. Had to use a small box fan to blow cooler air into the room to get the heat to go upstairs. Tried a fan at the top of the doorway but it didn't work as well. The stainless chimney liner (Z-Flex brand) - 25 foot of 4" liner including cap and hardware was $180 from a Maine plumbing supplier.

We have a Quadrafire Mt. Vernon and it looks exactly like this only with a flat finish. Runs great! We got it used and inserted for around 2k back in 2009/2010.

Wow ! Looks great ! Primary heat source ? Will it keep up on the really cold nights ? I have an Englander that I love, but when it gets really cold, it struggles to achieve 60° so I have to supplement with a Monitor K1.

Guygan OP t1_j1bf934 wrote

There's still a K1 monitor at the other end of the house that comes on once in a while.

How often do you have to shut down and clean yours ? I really want to replace my Englander with either a Harman or a Quadrafire. I have to clean mine constantly... 3 times a week at the very least .

Guygan OP t1_j1bgkeu wrote

About every two days I open the door, vacuum out the ash, and clean the window. It takes about 5 minutes.

Way2L8AND1 t1_j1bh4kb wrote

Wow ! With it still lit ? Ash vac I assume ? I'm almost embarrassed to say but daily I use a long large cooking spoon and scoop out the ashes, but weekly if not twice a week I have to shut it down and clean under the burn plate :(

Thanks for the info

Happy Holidays ! Stay warm, and best wishes with the wind and rain. Hope we all keep power.

Of course not.

I just wait until it isn't burning - which is most of the time. I use an ash vac. It's only about a cup of ash each time.

What do you spend on pellets per winter

1

Guygan OP t1_j1boi38 wrote

About $500.

1

MerlinCybor t1_j1euyuc wrote

That's maybe 2 pallets at a good price. You must have either a very small area being heated, or incredible insulation.

1

Guygan OP t1_j1ew3ps wrote

Yeah about a pallet and a half.

We also have a k1 monitor.

Looks to be burning a bit inefficiently/low temperature?

That’s a lot of soot on the glass.

It needs to be cleaned. It’s overdue.

> burning a bit inefficiently/low temperature?

It constantly varies the flame intensity automatically. Sometimes it looks like Hades in there. And sometimes not.

I'm getting ready to switch from wood to a propane stove. I've used wood since 1983, but with prices what they are, and the work involved, it's a young man's game.

I like that propane is all stacked when they deliver it :)

Pellets aren’t bad. Lifting a 40lb bag once a day is pretty easy.

yep...we did pellets for a few years in Mass. Didn't like having to have power, and thought that offset any savings by quite a bit. Was also noisy, since it was in our great room.

Pellet prices have gone up a bit too...saw $399/ton yesterday.

Mine can operate off of a 12V battery if necessary. And I happen to have a few in my basement in the winter because of my boats. So not a big barrier.

I paid $320 a ton in October. I haven’t seen prices that high up here.

That was at Hammond Lumber in Bucksport.Propane looking better and better. I wish I could get wood delivered "palletized" ;)

I have a Harman P35i, it works great but this is one lovely looking pellet stove. Would this be comparable to the P35?
