I think they’re referring to the influx of New Yorkers that move here because our grossly overinflated rent/real estate is considered cheap to them.

More like Brooklynification (for now), but since the attack happened in Manhattan I thought I’d go with that.
Neither of those are really that accurate, they’re more metaphors for what’s happening in Portland: rising rents, rising prices, abundance of short term rentals, expensive drinks, and folks from NYC buying up second homes or wfh homes.
You are correct, though. Portland is not Manhattan.

I live in the area. When covid hit in that first month we all saw exactly how many New Yorkers have beach houses in Maine. It looked like a Manhattan rush hour at Hannafords in March. A really weird sight to see
