Governor Kathy Hochul responded "These are guys with the name Trevor, Bradley, Paula, these types of guys, they come from Maine, they come down here, they slash our police, they don’t go back home”

Sounds like a riff on LePages ‘Shifty’ ‘Shady’ comment from a while back.

That's not a machete, that's a kukuri.

I've never known a stable person to own one.

A cheap Cold Steel one at that.

Not Valyrian steel? What a hack.

It’s a type of machete. Machete’s are cheap. If you own an expensive one, your a dork.

Yeah, it’s, like, a farming tool. For cutting cane or squash stems. It’s not really a luxury item.

Whats dorky about having nice tools

I think the implication was nice functionally and durable tools, not one signed by tom cruise. I am sure you know the difference

If you don't know that the word you're attempting to mangle is actually "you're" (which stands for your are, not a possessive) then you're nowhere near as smart as a dork.

Around these parts. They are fairly standard in certain places. Very common everyday tool in some Nepalese and North Indian cultures.

The khukuri is a common tool in Nepal; a generally humble and kind nation, mostly Hindu and Buddhist, with a recent influx of extremist Islamists from India. The tool is found in various sizes and used for many things, from opening a letter or can and otherwise managing food, to building a structure. Any extremist or nihilist will find or make a weapon, be it a tool or psyche.

I’m just as averse as the next guy to the Manhattanization of Maine, but sending our worst as a counter-example is probably not the best way to change hearts and minds.

Manhattenization? Where in Maine is even remotely close to anything like Manhattan?

I think they’re referring to the influx of New Yorkers that move here because our grossly overinflated rent/real estate is considered cheap to them.

Now that work from home has become more scarce, it might slow down a bit.

More like Brooklynification (for now), but since the attack happened in Manhattan I thought I’d go with that.

Neither of those are really that accurate, they’re more metaphors for what’s happening in Portland: rising rents, rising prices, abundance of short term rentals, expensive drinks, and folks from NYC buying up second homes or wfh homes.

You are correct, though. Portland is not Manhattan.

I live in the area. When covid hit in that first month we all saw exactly how many New Yorkers have beach houses in Maine. It looked like a Manhattan rush hour at Hannafords in March. A really weird sight to see

What are we talking about here - a young troubled kid being drawn into radicalism on the internet, Southern Maine losing it's cultural identity while driving out the people that sustained it for generations, or whether to buy one or two machetes to attack police officers?
