It's easy to find bands doing great versions of metal, rock, hiphop, pop, etc. We have thousands of those and it's a great time for music because of it.

But who is pushing the boundaries and doing something that feels new? It doesn't have to be because of using a different instrument, sometimes it's just in the way they play, or even just the singer being very different.

For me (and maybe I'll get skewered for this), an example of a very unique approach (despite being formed in the 90's) is the album Ohms by Deftones. It's synth heavy, Chino is a very unique singer, one song even breaks down into finger snaps. It FEELS new and unique and difficult to categorize for that.

Who is doing something different?

Don't know if it might sway suggestions but I trend heavily toward the more artsy and rock/metal, but love to hear all genres.

EDIT: All sorts of neat suggestions here thank you! I'm going through them one by one.

Pierce The Veil in previous albums, and especially NF. Sleeping With Sirens in previous albums and Logic. Pvris. Ask me for specifics if you like. Yeah I hate that 'same shit' garbage too. Have fun.

Polyphia. It's basically a mixture of Metal, Hip-hop, and Jazz fusion. Each album has a different feel so it's worth going through their discography to see their evolution. They even did a Collab with Chino on their latest album. The song's called Bloodbath.

Check out The Dear Hunter- The Color a spectrum

36 tracks - every 4 songs is a color - every color a genre of music - 9 colors/genres. It's an album that starts dark with black.. red is like classic rock.. green is country.. etc.. wait until you get to violet.

Sturgill Simpson genre-hops with grace. A Sailor’s Guide to Earth and Sound and Fury are 2 albums that’ll surprise you if you think “all country artists just play cheesy country”

I’d say Glowbug and Crywolf. I just glt done writing this really long thing about the former and I don’t have it in me to do it again (just click on my profile and look at my previous comment) but I’d highly suggest these two artists for a very wild ride through fairy consistant amalgamation of genres.

Wow! For lack of better words, Young Fathers definitely has something different there. Cool shit. I love how they kinda had me chuckling in the beginning and then I was like...oh...

Sleaford, less enjoyable for me but still doing their own thing, so respect.

BCNR, almost a Talking Heads kinda feel. It was alright but I feel like the 'mess music' style has been done quite a bit over the years and never catches on because it clearly doesn't lend itself to repeated listens. It's more of an experience if you get me? Regardless, they are bucking the trends so that's cool.

Girl Band, interesting and definitely defying genres. Feels like LCD Soundsystem having a bad acid trip lol. Interesting to hear but wouldn't listen again.

Thank you for taking the time to list these though, I had fun checking them out and someone might find their new favorite here. Plus Young Fathers, I'm gonna have to check out more of them.

His solo work is very interesting. He also does unique concerts. I heard that in one tour he didn’t make a set list, he would try to DJ it by feeling the vibe of the crowd, start playing a song and expect the band to just catch on and join in quickly lol. I forgot what documentary I watched where it mentioned that.

They are all active bands and are or will be putting out new music, touring etc. so I’m glad something resonated with you there

I enjoyed the LCD Sound System on acid comment, that’s a great comment, and I appreciate you giving each one a listen and giving some feedback. Always interesting.

There is something about Young Fathers isn’t there. There new album Heavy Heavy just came out the other week or so, its slowly getting under my skin, I hope they are something that sticks with you and I hope you find plenty of other goods things to nourish your ear worm needs. I’ll be looking through the thread as well, so ta very much for that!

I’ve listened to both artist discography numerous times. While the pre Julian K era of Orgy might compliment Deadsy well on tour, they’re certainly different bands. The song writing, hardware, aesthetic, are all different. Their only real overlap is that they use synths over rock. By that measure, anyone doing industrial is copying Orgy.

Absolutely. I love that he can literally work with ANYONE and make good music. The only thing I had ever knew of him was that he was a part of Kanye’s “All of The Lights” song. Then when I heard his song “Mile High” with Travis Scott, I HAD to check out the rest of his stuff and I’m so glad I did.

Oh yeah I've heard him. It's pretty neat. I don't think I could do repeated listens but certainly worth checking out and maybe seeing live.

As for Apocalyptica, symphonic metal has actually been pretty well established since I think the late 90s! Fun genre though.
