There was discussion about a Costco being built at the site of the old Mulligan's Island in Cranston. Does anyone know if the plan has been finalized and an expected construction / opening date?
I heard they pulled out when the state legislature failed to allow alcohol sales at non-liquor stores.
Was it the state’s refusal to allow alcohol-sales at non-liquor stores, or traffic issues that led to Costco pulling out?

Typical Rhode Island. Nothing gets built unless you know a guy. Therefore nothing gets built, and people wonder why there’s housing crisis.

They won’t build a Costco here because they can’t sell alcohol. I personally think it’s a stupid law. Even places like Utah and North Carolina sell alcohol in grocery stores.
The owner keeps trying to sell it, but hasn't went through with it yet

Construction is underway behind what used to be the Davol/Citizens Bank building on Sockanosset. I haven’t heard any news lately about an opening date.
That’s actually true in this case. The Carpianato Group wanted Costco to use contractors supplied by Carpianato and Costco said no.

I know its a joke, partially, and true, partially but also blame (pretty much entirely) the liquor store lobby because I guess that has to be a thing in our world....

I read that they’re considering a new location on Sockanosset Cross Road. Any further news on this one? The article is from August 2022.

Multiple locations in Massachusetts would disagree with that assessment. MA didn't start allowing beer and wine in some grocery stores until the last decade. Hell, the first attempt with a ballot question failed spectacularly.
Costco still had like 5 stores open in MA. Alcohol sales will make it more enticing cause they can make more money but Costco can still do just fine without it.
The site proposal moved to behind/in front of Top golf where Citizens was. Not sure where it left off. Last "official" news was Cranston Mayor was on ch 10 news and said he signed the paperwork, waiting on announcement from realtors. And if you REALLY want to know what happens, you can search Cranston's plan commission meeting agendas lol.
I thought they voted against it because of parking and traffic.
So just to clarify, the new proposal has not been officially canceled? Having moved from out-of-state, I miss Costco more than anything else in RI!
There has been no official notification. Anything else out there is mostly speculation.
That’s always been a bullshit excuse. They said the same thing about Trader Joe’s.
Costco actually helped change the liquor laws in Washington state so they could sell liquor through their stores. It could happen here too!
I really don’t have a huge problem with the status quo, tbh. Maybe it’s growing up with it but it’s not that huge of an inconvenience
