I remember they went up around the time of, what was it, like First Night or something? And I thought they were for that… and then they stayed… forever.

Goddamn this post makes me feel old. I was in my late teens / early twenties when these went up and it was a local hot button topic. If I remember correctly they were like $100k cost to the taxpayers to install those nonsense symbols and people were PISSED

Here I just thought they were leftover neon lights that they didn't know what to do with for the last 25 years.

It's actually the state that require any new public construction or rehabilitation of public buildings spend 1% of the budget on public art, and the Convention Center is a state project.
