I'm too lazy to read, but certainly nutrition and weight has to be a factor. I don't think there is a statistically important number of obese persons who lived to be 100 or even 90. Or even skinny persons who lived long without a lot of fiber in their diet.
Helenium_autumnale t1_j5yl7gb wrote
There were 2 healthcare providers in some reddit thread the other day who agreed that in their practice, they never see obese people over 50. Either they lose weight, or fall prey to obesity-related conditions.

Buddy most of the US is obese and makes it past 50. Morbidly obese I'd believe but honestly there is a frightening amount of obese people out there
Atalung t1_j5zo47m wrote
The problem with that stat is that "obese" here is the clinical definition. I know several people that would be defined as obese but nobody would ever consider them that. That's not to say that there isn't an obesity issue, but the formal definitions are based off 19th century persons who had significantly different health statuses. BMI is useful for a population level tool and its nice to have decades of data, but it's not really useful for individuals
amaraame t1_j5zpgsa wrote

I know what you mean. It just depends on the person. I work in healthcare and I see people pretty young (60’s) in such poor health that can barely walk and can’t take care of themselves. I think about how difficult the rest of their lives will be. My grandma lived alone in her own home doing everything on her own until she was 94 years old. She died at home with my parents taking care of her. She suddenly started deteriorating around age 94. My parents took care of her for about four months (with the help of hospice) and she died at home. I want to live like her and die at home with family like her.
BigHugFromaStranger t1_j5yw2qk wrote
Your grandma is my goal!!!! Mine did, too, until she was 82 years old. As long as I'm mobile, happy, and healthy I'll be quite happy to be on this planet! But once my body (or mind) give out to the point of dependency for the rest of my life, I plan on giving myself an altruistic exit.

She said a gin and tonic before bed and stay out of other peoples buisness. When they left she told me she wanted to say "Stay away from dicks and you'll have no drama!" . Also said it was miserable living long enough to see your friends and most of your family die.

I worked at a nursing home to pay for college. One quiet little lady was turning 103 the next day. We asked her if she was looking forward to it. She thought a moment and then said “ You know, I don’t think I want to be 103.”
She died that night.
I am in my 60s now. I’d be happy to get to 80. I miss my parents. I miss my dogs and cats that have died. I miss more and more people every year. I’m okay with joining those I love, whether in an afterlife or just as part of the elements of the universe.
Getting old hurts. Not being able to do things for yourself is really hard. I can’t imagine wanting many decades of all this. I’m not afraid to die. I don’t want to rush it, but when it comes it’s just the last big transition.

All of my other grandparents died 90+, I maintain good (if dynamic) friendships and love being outside so it’s looking like I’ll live a long time… but… but… I’m now realising I’m no longer an old young person, but an young old person and the aches and pains are starting. The youngest age one of my parents died at was 82, the oldest 96. My father is 78 and has no issues with blood pressure, or sugar, and is great health, apart from needing a hip replacement. Are you interested in Kim Philby and John le Carré’s secrets, Dead Lions, the excellent TV series SAS Rogue Heroes and even Ungentlemanly Warfare in which Henry Cavill is to star? Well, there existed a less renowned but SAS related clique of maverick and patriotic British scoundrels in British Intelligence called Pemberton’s People who worked for Colonel Alan Brooke Pemberton CVO MBE.
During the Malayan Emergency (really a war) British Intelligence and covert units such as the Special Air Service worked closely together under the eagle eyes of Field Marshal Sir Gerald Walter Robert Templer and his ADC Alan Pemberton. In 1952 in Malaya they oversaw the establishment of 22 SAS Regiment. Since then its home has been in Hereford, England. Malaya proved to be an exquisite training ground for all involved in the dark arts of modern warfare.
Even the notorious spy Philby (who was a cousin of Field Marshal Montgomery) tried to get in on the act to support the communist backed insurgents and later some of Pemberton’s People starred in the real Clockwork Orange Plot as to be depicted in Samuel Martin’s The Ghost of Harold Wilson.
If you are interested in all this and more besides do check it out at TheBurlingtonFiles website and see the brief News Article dated 31 October 2022 … Pemberton’s People, Ungentlemanly Officers & Rogue Heroes.
