Quite the message from SW Washington.

Two of the ten Republican House members who voted to impeach President Trump were from WA. One (Newhouse) won his primary and was re-elected. The other (Herrera Butler) was primaried as retribution. That guy lost… to a Democrat… in a strong R district.

Good for Washington.

Agree with good chunks of this, but when Brian Baird was in office the distinct included lots of the Olympia area. Then WA got a new congressional district in the Oly area and that removed a major democrat-leaning area. I’m guessing Herrera Butler would have lost re-election in 2012 had the distinct still included Olympia. So long story short, I think this win was much less likely than any recent D victory in the last 10-20 years for this district.

From 538's website "Just to emphasize how unlikely that Democratic pickup in Washington’s 3rd District was, our midterm forecast gave Gluesenkamp Pérez just a 2-in-100 shot of defeating Kent. That is the upset of the cycle thus far. While Kent always seemed likely to be a weaker GOP candidate than Herrera Beutler, a Republican losing an R+9 seat is highly unusual in a midterm when Democrats control the White House."

I agree, hopefully she will be effective because she's intelligent and grounded. However, she has a mountain to climb now, so time will tell. Being an effective representative is incredibly difficult. Add that challenge to becoming a savvy politician in a difficult district.... some figure it out, some get lost.

Thankfully, she's been a capable student so far and that's a great start. I hope she gets a couple weeks off and then gets on with the job. She is a breath of fresh air and a huge gain for team normal.

Ya, I'm not surprised but that's unfortunate. She's in for the ride of her life. There's no going back; I wish her and her family the best. For those of us who've been supporting her, we now owe her our patience and good will.

Washington state has been Democrat for years &:

  • Has no income tax

  • Has median gas prices & lots of charging stations for electric cars

  • Is working on the homeless problem & has less than other states

  • Has some of the best public schools in the US & ranks highly in education (red states have the worst)

  • Low crime

  • No tax on groceries (& lower food prices with higher quality food)

  • Lowest prices for electricity in the entire US with most of it coming from green energy sources

  • Has lots of civil services, including extensive help for people with disabilities

  • Great roads

  • Excellent, state-of-the-art libraries

  • Clean air

  • Clean lakes, rivers, & streams (you can actually swim in them without getting poisoned!)

  • Freedom for people with uteruses to get proper medical care

  • Beautiful parks, well-kept campgrounds, & natural spaces

  • Breathtaking scenery

  • Sustainable forestry

  • Leaders who actually are from this state & care about it because their families are also here

  • Plenty of trails & walkable areas as well as lots of support for hiking, fishing, camping, & hunting

  • Legal cannabis (medical & recreational)

  • Major corporations who contribute to the area

  • Lots of jobs in all sorts of industries

  • Strong LBGTQIA+ community with equal rights enshrined in state law & gender-affirming care

  • Delicious restaurants & all manner of shopping

  • Strong gaming community & lots of local game stores with over 200 video game studios in the Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond area alone, including the home offices of Bungie, Xbox, ArenaNet, Valve, Nintendo of America, etc.

  • Lots of craft breweries, coffee culture, & vinoculture

  • Excellent music & the birthplace of grunge & alternative rock

  • Professional sports teams including MLB, NHL, NFL, & soccer

  • Lots of awesome museums, including MoPOP (Museum of Pop Culture)

  • ALL THE APPLES!

  • Excellent hospitals that are leaders in the medical industry

  • True freedom of religion. The state is not “claimed” for any one religion & there are places of worship for people of all faiths. People who identify as atheist/agnostic don’t have to worry about one religion taking over the legislature & being forced on them.

  • Free birth control for WA residents

You clearly have never lived in WA or probably have never even been here. I came from awful red states in the Southern US. I watched with sadness as Tennessee got run into the ground by horrible Republican leadership. Washington state is amazing as are most of the people here.

Putting my comment here because OP is gone, because why the fuck not? Maybe they'll read it.

> Not sure what you're fighting for on the left exactly but your rights are slowly being eroded.

What, like overturning Roe vs. Wade and legal abortion? Or banning books? Or maybe voting rights and disenfranchisement? Or employee protections against sexism and anti-LGBTQ bigotry? Or the right to unionize?

Yeah, those rights are slowly being eroded but it's the GOP doing it.

It's not the barely moderate centrist Democrats that barely even resemble "leftist" politics as found in the rest of the world that is attacking those civil rights.

GTFO and go look at what the GOP actually votes on and is "fighting for" and unless you're secretly a billionaire it's definitely not you.

No, seriously, what "rights" do you think the GOP is fighting for for you? What policies do you actually like? Have they accomplished them or is it just a lot of rhetorical identity politics about guns, church or cheap gas?

I only just moved here from Wisconsin a few months back, and it's a breath of fresh air in every sense. While my cost of living has gone up a little, my quality of living has skyrocketed, and I earn a lot more than I did before moving. My observation has been that social responsibility is a big thing here, and WA is all the better because of it. It truly is amazing.

As a native of Washington and I live in south (7 months and I’m home bound 🥹) right now for family stuff. FL has just completely crapped on the average person. The neighbor states just reflect that as well. It’s insane that people come here and pay similar housing prices to Spokane or even Seattle on like 50% the wages. So many of my new neighbors can only live here because they work remotely for a blue state company that pays worth a damn.

I miss home so much. Especially after Ian. That was the worst experience in my life.

As Haz pointed out above, freshman school and hiring take up time but "holiday" takes on a whole new meaning. Everyone and their 10 best friends want your attention. One tiny example, every county in the district has a Democratic Central Committee, each of those will be asking for her to attend a meeting asap. Same for the Chambers of Commerce, the bigger Port Districts, County Commissioners etc. the list goes on and on. Campaigns are nonstop. But the expectations after the election are as well: she will be EXPECTED ("what, we're not important enough for Ms Reed College?") to be everywhere in the district. That's just home district stuff. Then there are the endless flights to and from DC (and other locations) to meet and participate in the endless functions and meetings. It's a "challenging" existence. Holiday breaks don't mean what civilians think they mean.

I'm worried about what they pull in 2024 in revenge. For decades now the GOP's positions have been increasingly unpopular and untenable, and it's becoming increasingly clear that they need to cheat in order to win elections. That ball has already started rolling in several states which have been passing laws enabling the GOP legislature to overrule their voting populace and appoint their own electors for president. After this, I fear the GOP may abandon the idea of winning democratically altogether. Except this time, it won't be Trump leading the charge but DeSantis.

I think much the same thing about people who get outraged about Manchin. I get it, but if he gets primaried then WVa elects a Republican replacement. And then Mitch McConnell would be Majority Leader. That would be much, much worse than having Manchin stymie certain policy goals.

This is difficult to understand considering how improbable it was.

In the primary held in August this district had 73,060 Dem votes and 142,550 Republican votes. Of those Perez got almost all the Dem vots at 68,190. Kent got 50,197, out going Butler got 49,001, and a third candidate got 35,219. Key thing to note is that the R total turnout was 142K vs 73K D turnout... at 2:1 ratio. Dems ran one candidate and turnoout was overwhelmingly supported R's but was largely split 3 ways.

Then the general election happens 3 months later and it's a complete flip. Perez gets 153,169, doubling hers and dems turnout in the primary. Kent gets barely gets more than the total R turnout in the primary increasing from 142K to 149K.

So what happened. Did R voters in the primary vote D in the general, or did D's not vote in the primary and showup 2X in the general? When has this EVER happened to this large of extent?

It was only 3 months? Fivethirtyeight had it 98% chance win for Kent. I didn't hear of any campaigning for Perez (yes, I'm in the district), but the car shop owner wins. Stunningly improbable turn of events.

In WA-8 district, the other competitive district, the D:R ratio from the primary to general doesn't change much. This indicates that people that vote R in the primary continue and vote R in the general. In this case Larkin's primary votes with many R's running increased from 34,684 to 139,766 in the general where he is the only R running.

In the WA-8 Primary there were 101,201 D votes and 100,293 R votes. Each increases ~50% (60% D/ 40% R) in the general: D 159,131, R 139,766.

The WA-3 and WA-8 had similar total turnouts in the Primary and General... from 200K to 300K:

  • WA-3 Primary 220K
  • WA-8 Primary 204K
  • WA-3 General 304K
  • WA-8 General 299K

Truly unreal results.
