it's the furniture store who cried wolf

Seriously

They’ve been going out business and having a sale since before the dinosaurs.

operator_1337 t1_irx8e4d wrote

Yeah they are redoing their aux parking lot right now too.

At what point is it false advertising or does that phrase/law even exist anymore?

Cue Rotmans going out of business sale posters everywhere for the next 2 years.

Makes sense to me. I went there to shop for a mattress a couple months ago, the place stunk like mildew throughout the store, the AC didn’t work and the water fountains only had hot water. I didn’t buy anything: if that’s how they present their display then I don’t want to find out how they store their stock.

Swak_Error t1_irww0ja wrote

I don't understand, I thought like a year ago they had a closing for remodeling sale.

Did they not actually remodel? Or did they do such a shitty job that it took less than a year for mold and mildew to come in?

25

HighVulgarian t1_irwwl3x wrote

I didn’t know about the remodel, that fact really amplifies my concerns. Now I’m triple glad I didn’t buy!

kingcaptainclutch t1_is19m5a wrote

The “remodel” was just them closing half the showroom. However, they didn’t downsize their inventory, they just crammed it all in the remaining showroom space lol

thedjbigc t1_irwqriy wrote

It is my understanding their storage warehouse was somewhere in Clinton, MA.

cgaels6650 t1_irye5wz wrote

Oh yeah we used to drink beers and have fires behind it from all the pallets and thrown out couches

3

Forgot_the_Jacobian t1_irxppwy wrote

I also had trouble walking in half of the store because the ceiling was too low lol

kingcaptainclutch t1_is19h5l wrote

I worked there for a while and the AC has always been broken. They refused to fix it. Got out of there as soon as I moved out of Worcester

Just close and give us a market basket already

There’s one going in in Shrewsbury

5

albalfa OP t1_iryvqmz wrote

Yeah I know, but for me (selfishly!) the Oxford one is easier to get to--all highway. Getting to that area of Rt 20 (again, for me) is probably a similar length of time, but a pain in the ass of non-highway roads.

FWIW, the same holds true for relatives who live not far off West Mountain St. Just easier to get to Oxford than that area of Shrewsbury.

jg429 t1_is7w8d7 wrote

Yeah I’ll probably keep going to Hudson. Once you imprint on a MB, it’s hard to change lol.

Source: I grew up in Billerica where we had three and everyone had a favorite 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hopefully the large space that it occupies can be used for redevelopment and it won’t sit there closed for years.

17

JohnnyGoldwink t1_irwv4jy wrote

Agree. That location could be something cool. Hopefully someone with some $$ seizes the opportunity.

kingcaptainclutch t1_is199t3 wrote

When I used to work there I heard tell that Holy Cross was interested in buying up the building and using it for student housing.

Just moved to the city a year ago. Are they constantly going out of business or is it for real for real this time? Grew up near a store on the north shore that my father and I were certain was a mob front because it was going out of business from grade school until I was in college.

Murais t1_irzb7wb wrote

Oh, we've had a few of those. Ask a long time Woo-dweller about the infamous "Lamp Store."

I don't believe them.

Hate_Gatekeeping t1_irx30sh wrote

From the information garnered here and elsewhere it looks like:

  1. Rotmans is not a major employer, espeicially for the amount of real estate it occupies.

  2. They have incredibly high mark-ups and constantly use gimmicky and dishonest sales tactics to rip off customers.

  3. Even if this is yet ANOTHER marketing ploy to drum up sales or restock inventory, it seems they should close anyways and make some room for honest business owners.

robthad t1_irxb7oz wrote

Opening under same management, name changing to Ratmons Furniture.

kanolog t1_irxavmc wrote

I always wondered how they stayed in business with how expensive their furniture was. They had an 80k rug. Who the hell in worcester can afford to buy that!

Mononokid t1_irxdx57 wrote

I bought a couch up in the bargain section a few years ago, it’s not a comfy as the day I bought it, but for the price and size (sectional in my first home) I’m happy with it. That said, I’d NEVER trust my spine to a mattress from them.

8

TrickyCell6458 t1_is1wt3d wrote

I bought a bed frame from them. Broke in less than a year. It was horribly designed

Rotmans is trash. It took 8 months for them to deliver the correct couch to us and it fell completely apart in like 4 years.

Lol I thought they were already out of business and I drive by everyday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Went there once when we moved to Worcester, I felt like most of the furniture was IKEA quality without IKEA’s low prices and that’s definitely not what I was looking for

New-Vegetable-1274 t1_is3bw7e wrote

That's too bad, I wonder how long they'll be going out of business before they're not going out of business. This is an old NYC trick, "Going out of business, prices slashed, everything must go." Maybe this time they're serious, Maybe Holy Cross will snap it up it make it final. If it's true, too bad, they used to sell nice furniture.
