Thanks, I’m a plumber, a copper bar seemed appropriate.

How much does a bar of solid copper go for exactly?

65

wcollins260 OP t1_j9hdra7 wrote

That’s a pound, and it was like $30-$35.

I think you can also get a five pound bar, and different shapes.

Amazon and probably a lot of places that sell gold and silver collectibles.

FirstGonkEmpire t1_j9hds4x wrote

Damn, I looked it up, only 4 bucks? I thought it was way more considering how much it gets stolen.

25

wcollins260 OP t1_j9hmpdl wrote

It’s around $30 for the brick/ingot. Old copper scraps for around $3.50 these days, at least around here.

CasualMonkeyBusiness t1_j9i1078 wrote

Electrician here. Copper is pretty heavy - for example 500 kcmil wire is 1.54lbs per foot. I can spend a Sunday cleaning up some scraps and make $1k in one trip to the yard.

The biggest I ever scrapped from my old work was 4/0 and even that added up quick.

$4 per pound is a lot for the kinds of people who steal it

That's at least a bottle of cheap booze.

I have a buddy, who happens to be somewhat of a general contractor/handy man and really no slouch in plumbing skills absolutely hates handling copper. He says it makes him feel dirty and can smell it on his hands. Really gives him the heebie jeebies.

I'm totally gonna try to get him one of these.

7

wcollins260 OP t1_j9i10nn wrote

Yeah, old copper does get on your hands and smell a little. But it comes right off, unlike silicone, primer, and some other things.

11

thunderGunXprezz t1_j9i216b wrote

Ya I totally get that. I think its a somewhat common thing. Not necessarily something I'd call a phobia but some sort of condition. As I think about it more, ny son often complains about wanting to wash his hands after handling any sort of metal objects, like coins, nails, screws etc.

2

thatsme55ed t1_j9k80yz wrote

It's possible to develop an allergy to metals. I have a strong allergy to nickel to the point I get really painful oozing sores if I wear anything with nickel in it for a full day (like belt buckles or metal glasses frames).

I can handle change and metal items like knives to use them, but not prolonged exposure.

1

JJagaimo t1_j9im5jk wrote

Technically it doesn't get on your hands; the copper interacts with skin oils and breaks them down, which makes that "metallic" smell. That's why coins that smell "metallic" are actually just gross and covered in skin oils.

I read your comment first as "STOP STOP STOP STOP, NO NO NO!!!" for 15 minutes, but in reality is probably some 15 minute long iteration of the following...

You hear noise

Look up, cat makes eye contact with paws and claws outstretched

"Don't you dare."

Cat puts paws back down, you look away

You look back up after 1 second

Cat paws out stretched, cat looks up, sees you and pauses

"I said, don't. you. dare."

Cat stares, challenging your power

Insert cat name "I said no!"

Cat puts paws down, you stare, cat stares

4

wcollins260 OP t1_j9i9rgc wrote

Yeah I guess I’m lucky that she eventually settles down and lays on the chair. But yeah, when I go into the office she comes in and does all of those things for a good 10-15 minutes. I’ve learned to just turn on the tv and screw around until she settles down before I start on the important stuff. It works out.

Fluffiest_Toe_Beans t1_j9ibxjb wrote

Yep, you're very lucky, lol! My cat isn't content to just sit here in my office, nope - when he gets bored, he hops up onto one of the desks or counters and starts chewing on my paperwork and file boxes! He once chewed the corner of a certified court document. Oops.
