trouble with a lot of those is how inflexible and demanding they are. i do not miss working BOH where every spare moment had my phone blowing up like "can you come in", my shifts never actually ended when the schedule said they would, and if i got scheduled for a day i couldn't work and couldn't find someone to cover for me i'd just get fired. like sure, it's work! but definitely not what i'd call a "side hustle". i definitely don't miss it.

Not sure where you go to college, but you could probably find a job on campus that would be willing to work around your schedule. That's basically the difference between a "regular job" and a side hustle: schedule

Campus jobs are always going to be the best job when it comes to balancing work and school.

I started doing the research studies as a side hustle. Some of them pay $1500+. The cannabis ones are my favorite. It’s been a nice supplemental income so far

Interested, how do you sign up?

DfcukinLite t1_jds6imt wrote

You google search paid Hopkins research studies, find a study that applies to you to participate in and do the screening questions, if you’re eligible they’ll contact you. They have in-person and virtual studies

Along with waiting tables, consider working for a landscaping company. Either regular lawn service or a “tidy up the shrubs for Easter” company. Depending on which suits you better and better relieves the stress of regular life.

There's always the plasma places. It's definitely a hustle because in order to make any real money(thru bonuses) you have to pretty much schedule your whole life around donating as frequently and consistently as you're allowed. I sold at csl on Northern Parkway for a few months a few years ago.

Hey, my husbands company is looking for a showing agent (show apartments in the good parts of town to prospective tenants). You do the scheduling but it’s mostly weekends and after work hours to accommodate workers. Message me if you’re interested!

If you have a car, Angi’s list hires contractors on an app & you make your own schedule and pick your own jobs. Definitely not the greatest source of income, but I’ve done housecleaning work off there when short on bills / groceries & it’s money when you need it

Used to enroll for focus groups through Focus Baltimore. An easy couple hundred for random focus groups every few weeks.

Dogsitting is the best side hustle. Everyone has a dog, or some kind of pet, in Baltimore.

Go hang around Home Depot and pick up some work as a day laborer. Honest work, as opposed to most things you can do with most college educations.

For my benefit, can you define what "honest work" means in this context?

a job is a job; a side hustle is what you take on when your job(s) doesn't pay you enough to get by but demands so much of your time that you can't just tack another one on. the last time i worked part-time (on top of two other jobs to make ends meet while i was in school!) even the most flexible employers demanded double the availability for what they actually scheduled me for, and somehow were great at always scheduling me on the days/times i'd notified them i would never be available (due to the two other jobs thing) but since they'd already made the schedule it was now my job to find someone to cover me. and this was pre pandemic when the getting was pretty good! shockingly, as the economy has taken a nosedive, conditions for workers have gotten even worse, so even us 30-somethings who've gotten something steady and are used to being treated even marginally better than dirt—like, even my worst part time jobs at least didn't give me problems when i needed to go to a funeral, which seems unthinkably luxurious now—may not have experienced the need to find something both flexible and supplemental in this way.
