I am the type of person who forces himself to start something before he enjoys it, be it exercise, books, or even movies. I generally have to spend effort to continue something and not give up halfway from boredom or laziness. With that being said, sometimes I start something, get hooked and at that point I consume it like a madman. I started reading this book series once called "Ascendance of a bookworm" and I immediately got hooked, I finished the first volume in a day, something that I have never done before, I started the second volume the next day literally the moment I woke up. My addiction didn't stop and I spent the next 12 days reading all 20 volumes. At this point in my life I had never read this much. At that time, I was on break from school and college was way off, and so I spent every waking hour reading.

I sorta miss that feeling of being completely engrossed on one thing, I get distracted easily, and was looking for a similarly addictive series. I have heard only good things about Brandon Sanderson and so I started reading Mistborn sometime in the last two months. I finished with The Final Empire and The Well Of Ascension, and while I certainly did enjoy them and think the series is pretty good, I didn't consume them nearly as fast as I did when I was reading Ascendance Of A Bookworm.

Anyhow, What are some books that you consumed ridiculously fast just from sheer enjoyment?

His journey is amazing! Just read it, I did not see that ending coming, normally i don't like ridiculous power ups like that, but this was different.

I read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir over the course of 3 days. And this is a nice, fat 500+ page book too. I simply could not put it down.

I finished the martian two days ago, I'm definitely reading more Andy Weir. Do you think I should skip artemis and go straight for project Hail Mary?

hgaterms t1_iyelk7e wrote

I'd say yes, go straight to Project Hail Mary. That book is an absolute treat.

You can then go back and read Artemis later. It's not bad, but it's his weakest book. The plot of Artemis is great and exactly what you would expect from an Andy Weir novel, but the characters fall a little flat.

I ate the Harry Potter series in the span of 3 days as a preteen. Then I consumed as my fanfiction as I could get my grubby hands on

This might be considered cheating but during the black Friday sales I got a bunch of Junji Ito's works for cheap... I have now read 5 full volumes each around 500 - 700 pages long.

Manga is easier to get through but dear god did I attack those!!! Such an odd mind!

I have been meaning to read more of his works for a while. It's definitely not cheating, manga can be just as good as any book. I'll definitely check more soon! Junji works are so creepy and scary, and the manga medium lends itself really well with his awesome art. And I've only read Uzamaki!

Uzamaki was the one that got me hooked actually so I ended up on amazon just buying whatever they had in-stock!

So far it and No longer human are my favorites. He's just so creative.

I watched the TV series, is it worth reading from the beginning? I listened to half of the first volume's audiobook.

Rachel Cusk's "Outline" series is three books and the first was published in chunks in the Paris Review over a year, so I read that one slow, and then read the second one flying to Arkansas and then read it again on the way home. Her prose is just soooo smooth.

Off the top of my head:

  • The Red Rising trilogy
  • Leviathan Wakes
  • Texicalaan duology
  • The Final Empire. (Really struggled with next two. I did not enjoy the Dragonball Z power up everybody got.)
  • Every book from Thursday Murder Club series.
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
  • This Is How You Lose a Time War
  • The Shadow of the Wind
  • Small Things Like These
  • All the Lights We Cannot See
  • A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet
  • Record of the Spaceborn Few
  • A Gentleman in Moscow
  • Jade City
  • The Kite Runner

I read Stephen King's Misery in one sitting when I was in high school. Then watched the movie as soon as I finished. Wish I still had the time to do stuff like that.

Jack Campbell's Pillars of Reality series. I was literally finishing one and not even getting out of my seat before starting the next one. Same with Cassandra Gannon's Wicked Ugly Bad series. And Karen Robards's Charlotte Stone series. And Anne Bishop's Others series.
