God dammit. I wanted to go to the Arclight because it's not an AMC.

Arclight is dead. It's either AMC or AMC now.

At least we have some good indie spots in the area. Coolidge Corner, Somerville Theatre, Kendall Square Cinema... All good if you're not trying to see mass-market stuff like Marvel movies.

How could you forget The Brattle!

ky0nn t1_j11wn9q wrote

Oh yeah! I forgot about them since I haven't been there as much as the other three, mostly out of convenience, but it's another solid option.

somegummybears t1_j12sek7 wrote

Arclight was hardly indie.

And the AMC downtown does a decent job showing not just blockbusters.

corned_beef_balls t1_j11yfap wrote

Kendall at least plays the mass market stuff too. I saw black widow there.

The Arclight experience will be but a mere cross-country flight away, as the original Arclight in LA will re-open next year, as the company owns the land and buildings, unlike Arclight Boston, which was leased.

seriousnotshirley t1_j13mtdp wrote

I knew about ArcLight from having gone to the one in Hollywood randomly. It was such an amazing experience that when I first read about Arclight coming to Boston in 2013 or 2014 I was pumped.

I saw one movie and that was it. Such a disappointment.

I am just glad that space isn't being wasted.

True, but I thought I heard that Alamo Drafthouse was thinking about taking the space over at one point. I would've preferred them over AMC.

There’s an Alamo going into the seaport so we at least have that to look forward to

Talk about terrible timing.

And AMC being able to raise more money coming out of COVID lockdowns thanks to people who use the word “stonks” makes this just… I don’t even know what.

seadev32 t1_j11xc9p wrote

Managed to see 1 movie there in the before times. It was a pretty nice theater, I'm curious if AMC will run it as a luxury style theater like arclight went for

Well, investors who like a stock did exactly what investors who buy a stock do. Help a company grow and make profits. Now short sellers on the other hand…

SinibusUSG t1_j134awz wrote

Let's not pretend that investors liked AMC stock for any reason other than it being the one they randomly chose to be their pump-and-dump target, or that it and GME were in any way representative of the investment system working as intended. There's a reason AMC is back to its pre-COVID price

7

Friendly-Matter-3819 t1_j1360k5 wrote

I’m in gme not amc but yea that was the motive at first. Then the light was shined on how corrupt the system really is after they took away the buy button and prevented a squeeze 2 years ago and Now I want gme to succeed.

charons-voyage t1_j13os1w wrote

GME is toast. Hope you didn’t get too far in. It was always just a pump and dump.

5

DevenStonow t1_j13s99c wrote

the buy button was never removed

the squeeze already happened

literally nothing corrupt is going on with GME

have fun thinking you're going to become rich off a failing videogame retailer that treats it's employees like shit and thinks an NFT marketplace is a good idea

You have no idea what your talking about. How’s your 401k doing lately. How much did you loose in 2008? The entire financial market is a giant Ponzi scam and retirement funds are the ones who loose most because all the banks and hedge funds use your 401k and other retirement funds money on foolish risky bets in the case of GME they lost that bet. Keep listening to the main stream news narrative. AMC and GME were far from pump n dumps.

SinibusUSG t1_j13xr1k wrote

Shouldn't you be listening to InfoWars or something?

Go_fahk_yourself t1_j13xxrb wrote

What the fuck is info wars?

I’ll assume it’s a typical insult from a typical Bostonian who thinks they know everything but really only knows what they hear from tv

Gotta be rough having your entire sense of self (and financial) worth tied up in a meme stock that went bust.

Cut your losses, cry it off, and wisen up.

I doubt that the people who bought AMC stocks are the same people who care much about what theaters they go to.

Still miss this space. Saw the Uncut Gems premiere w/Sandler, Garnett (and a lot of Celtics) as they opened. Such a better experience.

This is a fantastic theater. Particularly the large auditorium is the best movie experience in Boston IMO. Great audio and video, truly comfortable ergonomic seats (none of this heated recliner crap).

Part of the magic was in the way Arclight managed it (limited commercials only before showtime, shows starting on time, no in seat service). Some of this will certainly go away with AMC, but it will be great just to have this theater back online.
