Kind of surprised that given Tesla is such a big name in EV, the US export is so much smaller than Germany.

In 21 Fremont spent most of its production servicing the US market. It was mostly the Chinese factory that exported. That is part of the reason China exported so much.

Tesla makes their European cars in Berlin

But not in 2021. Their German factory started production in April 2022.

I'm assuming that cars that Tesla produces in China are considered domestic for the purposes of these numbers. Same with all car manufacturers which makes this a chart of manufacturing independent of manufacturers home base

Tesla made EVs trendy. Now it's time for real car makers to take over.

Germany doesn't have to send something very far for it to be technically an export.

they'd be made and sold in the US, so not imported or exported. so not on the list

Weird that Japan is nowhere to be found. At least here in Tokyo tons of cars and buses are electric. I guess they make them only for themselves so they don’t go in or out?

Japanese native cars tend to not sell well in other markets. They have to produce models specifically with foreign markets in mind; I’m guessing they focused on the domestic market first.

I would have expected them to be quite high in exporting, namely Toyota.

bizarrely, Japanese companies are losing the competition over electric cars.

Toyota barely makes electric cars, generally too expensive.

Those numbers don't make any sense. #doubt. Is this counting cars with gas engines or something? Counting hybrids as "EVs" should be severely discouraged.

Hybrids aren't terrible but they should be listed as hybrids, not EVs.

PolyPill t1_jcdp9ln wrote

I suspect they are also counting PHEV Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Which I agree with you should not be counted as it muddies the water.

Why does your title say 2021 when OEC complexity- and trade-related data seems to only be available through 2020? Where's your data coming from since it's not at your link?

RobinWheeliams OP t1_jcf709s wrote

Hi Kompootor, I have early access to the development version of the site before it's published! So I have access to the data before it is released. I suspect they will make it publicly available within the next month.

what are the biggest German electric car brands? VW obviously, but what others? Google is confused and thinks I'm asking about what's being bought there, not what's being made there.

LARRY_Xilo t1_jccwu61 wrote

VW (which includes Audi), BMW and then Mercedes. Opel started just last year so there arent real numbers yet. We had some start up brands but they mostly failed or got bought up.
