I live in NJ and don't see anyone offering less than $18/hr. Minimum wages across tge country have basically been rendered meaningless by inflation.

I wouldnt call the entire economy meaningless.

What's that even supposed to mean? All I'm saying is that if the minimum wage is $10, but everyone I'd offering $15+ then the minimum wage law isn't relevant.

Because you are making an assumption what is being offered isn't based off the minimum wage.

LinCashew t1_j42f6i3 wrote

they aren't.

it's just a fact that companies are hiring people for higher salaries and minimum wage is lagging behind

SexyDoorDasherDude OP t1_j430fsk wrote

So you're saying if the minimum wage was zero wages would be increasing anyways?

LinCashew t1_j43c313 wrote

obviously, do you think if minimum wage was zero people would just work for free?

comapanies are going to pay as little as they can for the service, they have no reason to pay more just to be exactly 2x minimum wage.

Is that a yes or a no?

POV: you don't know what "obviously" means nor read what people say in a discussion

Ok so what are other labor rights do you want to rip apart?

LinCashew t1_j447zys wrote

POV: you jump into conclusions and think people want to end labor rights just because they explain basic economics to you

They should INCREASE minimum wage because it is lagging behind

Minimum wage isn't the entire economy, it's like 1% of the economy. That's basically meaningless

This is intetesting! And the data is presented beautifully. Though perhaps exagerated a bit? At least in MA the graphs use the median in boston. Statewide it s about $6 less. However, the larger point the graphs make, that there is a HUGE gap between minimum and the median (assuming the median is relational to cost of living idk), is significant.

I wish the axis on the bottom right charts were not grainy. I cannot tell what the scale of the bars mean.

The bar graphs are wildly misleading. Only 15-20% difference in value but the higher bars are 5x longer? Start your x-axes from zero.

From a visualization standpoint, it would be stronger to illustrate a gap with a visual gap. could you lay out the graphs so the image and the metaphor match?

No wonder why California food is so expensive. California fast food was going to be $22 but was blocked for 1 year.
