That took me far to fucking long dude. I was searching like I was looking for fucking Waldo or something. My gods man I was back to those hard I-Spy books from when I was in 3rd grade. You just gave me flashbacks and ptsd. Unlocked that core traumatic memory.

I get that the fingers is a funny internet game and all, but a dude with a decal on his car is likely more showing the more modern interpretation of the hand symbol; white power, alt right bullshit.

Githyerazi t1_je5es7m wrote

I don't even know what the classical interpretation should be, much less the modern one. I thought it was a decal because his car was too low to put those rubber testicles that trucks or on the trailer hitches. I personally interpret them to mean "my balls are back here, the dick is up front driving"

Yeah, unfortunately probably time to stop playing this game since that symbol has been cooped by white supremacists. At the very least it brings to mind the possibility that the guy put it there as a dog whistle.

mykreau t1_je5q74u wrote

Don't know why you're all mad at me, I didn't coopt the symbol for a racist agenda and ruin your fun. That's the trouble with Nazis and bigots (among other things), they take something kinda fun and interesting, like an internet punching game, Nordic runes, the number 88, Tibetan symbols, Mazdas, comic book characters, America, etc and totally ruin it for everyone.

ExhibitionistBrit t1_je5u412 wrote

This isn’t even valid for that game. You have to be able to put your finger through the hole. A picture of the hand is nothing.

Tok3n- t1_je5ubyo wrote

No, it’s not time to stop. There’s no hateful intent there. It’s a game for kids. If white supremacists started using the peace sign, or sign language, would we have to stop that too? What if they started saying “love” as a hate word, should I stop telling my family that I love them? No…that’s just foolishness and fear mongering.

So long as you’re not acting like a racist shitbag and your intentions are good, you shouldn’t change your behavior. Some little group’s idea of what hate gestures are will corrupt everything and everyone if you let them win.

There's the way the world should be, and there's the way the world is. Yeah, it should work the way you want it to, but it doesn't. Believe it or not, if one of the first impressions people have about you is the possibility that you're a white supremacist, it's going to negatively impact your life.

It's why I don't fly the Canadian flag anymore. Because ignorant assholes have turned it into a symbol of ignorance, so if I fly it, that will be people's first thought. Sure, if they talked to me and got to know me they would see that I'm not an ignorant asshole, but far more people are going to see the flag than actually get to know me.

They use them in movies and history books frequently. Their intent is not to spread hate, it’s to teach anti-hate. Yes, they are okay when their intentions are not racist.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to elaborate further. I hope that clears it up.

I mean as a religious symbol. It was a religious symbol before it got appropriated by the nazis.

I believe a significant amount of people would find it unbearable if that sign were to be displayed on the streets.

Is this the Huntington, Garfield and Atlantic intersection?

2

Tok3n- t1_je5zlxu wrote

Yes, it is okay and is still used as a religious symbol. My mother in law follows Buddhism and some of her statues have the symbol on it. She doesn’t eat meat, doesn’t kill bugs (intentionally), believes in non violence and watches pbs kids and other family friendly shows. Like this picture though, the angle on her statues are not the same and there is no hate intended in her prayers.

Edit: Part two to your post: If it was turned from a symbol of peace to a symbol of hate, in time it could return to a symbol of peace again if people chose to believe in it. For now they see it as a symbol of hate, and that’s completely understandable.

The swastika is also still used throughout the world by various cultures and religions and the symbol predated Hitlers appropriated versjon of it. The hand circle thing was a meme and it successfully tricked stupid people like you into sheeping out on your views.

Gobiego t1_je64zjt wrote

Not only that, but it was a 4chan troll job that some folks looking for boogie men latched onto. The freaking circle game hand signal has NOTHING to do with anything else, despite how desperately some folks cling to that myth. 4chan trolls are the best trolls.

It was an online prank to show off the gullibility of media organizations. Major news companies and even the Anti-Defamation League bought it hook, line, and sinker.

After the hoax was revealed aforementioned organizations doubled down rather than admit that they were fooled. Vague assertions that "no really, actual racists are doing it now" fell flat with the public.

Interesting_Pudding9 t1_je69l4i wrote

That show hasn't been made for over 15 years. It's out of date. I am fully aware of the history of the circle game, it's an experience I lived through. But things change, it's unreasonable to expect the world to stay exactly the same as it was when you were a child.

Apparently some people are oblivious to this gem of a game

I’m not sure why people downvoted you for stating a fact. Yeah, the gesture has been used to mean other things. But it has most recently been co-opted by the natzi wannabes and used to mean exactly what you say it is used to mean. It sucks that it has been co-opted in that way, but it’s true.

Hyperbole Train, you’re intentionally obtuse. We’re obviously not Nazis, we are people who are calling out the Nazi dog whistles. If something in use is hurting people because it has been co-opted by a hate group and then the co-opted version of it ends up being used in things like political rallies than it should be called out when people use it so that they understand there might be unintended consequences of their use of it. The word “Idiot” was once a valid diagnostic term that would not fly today. Hysterical was another term that was in medical use and has since taken on other meaning and would not be appropriate to use today. For example, it would not relate to their originally intended uses if I were to call you hysterical or an idiot for calling us Nazis; that would be inappropriate.
