I want a gold Apple Watch ultra with a bigger face and a camera. That way I can finally be Dick Tracy.

Right before my dad passed recently, I showed him how to answer a call from his Apple Watch like dick tracy. Most excited I’d seen him in years! He was in the hospital calling me randomly.

Projecting 1 MM units sold in the first year at $3k a pop? Apple had a strong record of defying expectations but this estimate seems absolutely ludicrous

Edit: maybe I’m being too pessimistic. Apparently meta quest 2 has sold 15 MM units in 2 years, which I never would have expected. Obviously that model is much cheaper than the price target apple is setting

Unless it is not. Heard many similar when they release airpods and watch. I am not a fan , but don't underestimate Apple.

it's 3,000. i can believe it at 1,000 price but not 3k.

You underrate people that could easily throw this amount out at anything apple. You must realize by now.

3x the price of a flagship iPhone for a headset most people will use 1% the amount they use their phone, if that? How many of those people do you think there are?

Most won't even spend $400 on a watch they would wear every day. Even among fanboys, even with the Apple marketing machine standing behind this, the demand for a "mixed-reality" headset is not there at $3k

kolob_hier t1_jdwzick wrote

It’s possible they may be aimed at an enterprise market, which may make more sense for the price.

I can’t find any numbers for Oculus Pro, but it is half the price.

However Apple headset would be much tighter knit to the ecosystem of some companies, so there may be a huge value add there that may allow it to beat Oculus number with a high price. Guess we’ll see in June

I'm on the fence. It has yet to be seen how good their headset will be, how large the venn diagram of apple fans and VR users is. Further how well this will compel plain old VR enthusiasts to pick one up, and if it's really 10x the launch price of quest 2 and now 3x the pro (previously 2x) it better be fucking amazing

The quest 2 was $300 for the longest time. $300-$600 is within the realm of a fancy christmas/birthday gift to keep the kids entertained. $3000 is not.

I remember when the iPad was announced, and everyone was laughing at the product name, comparing it to a feminine product. There were so many naysayers claiming there would be no real use for it, because people had smartphones and laptops, so something in between wasn't necessary and would fail. Now look at their sales. I'm not saying their headset is the next revolutionary thing, but I wouldn't automatically bet against Apple either - they have time and time again innovated and invented a need that didn't exist before.

Do not believe this was at all true. When Steve Jobs showed the iPad people were pretty amazed right off the bat.

I mean it was basically this piece of glass that was pretty thin.

I’m not talking about Steve’s big reveal. It was leaked long before that and everyone said it was dumbest thing, just like what we’re seeing with the headset now.

Majestic-Praline-696 t1_je56fkk wrote

Exactly. It was all "It's just a big iPhone, that's dumb lol!"

And now Apple is the only tablet in town, they own the market.

Same with the watch, and the iPod back in the day.

Imagine working anywhere (e.g. outside) with your laptop but now you have a bunch of extra screens. That’s about the only thing that has made me interested in these headsets.

belarged t1_jdzdtpy wrote

That part sounds awesome, but I’ve heard of motion sickness and headaches being a real issue, limiting the amount of time you could actually use a VR headset.

For some people it’s a few minutes, for some it’s a couple of hours. I don’t know if there’s a fix for that, or if it’s just what happens when you take over an entire sense without bringing the others along.

Tier161 t1_je006el wrote

Tbh most people I've seen having motion sickness in VR had them in room-scale, standing still is better, seated games like Elite Dangerous/Squadrons barely provoked any. But ofc YMMV

Kaeny t1_je0xee5 wrote

Lmao. It’s freakin Apple. Their headset is just going to use APIs they’ve had in iOS for 5+ years. There’s absolutely nothing Meta is doing that Apple can’t duplicate in less than a year.

Harbinger2001 t1_jdxtq8v wrote

I don’t think Apple would want to duplicate anything meta is doing.
