“We finally made something with better fans than a FE” no idea how OEMs keep selling reference boards with garbage plastic shields and awful fans. I wish I could just buy the card and HS separately like with CPUs.

Nvidia squeezes the AIBs on margins. They restrict the MSRP range that AIBs can sell at, which limits the quality and engineering work that AIBs can put into their cards. The AIBs get a pretty slim profit after accounting for the cost of the GPU dies to them, plus Nvidia’s profit margin on the die, which Nvidia doesn’t incur on their own FE cards.

This, as well as a whole bunch of other reasons, is a big factor in why AIBs have been unhappy with Nvidia, and why EVGA decided to quit its GPU business. Gamers Nexus did a bunch of comprehensive interviews, and it’s well worth a watch.

They sell them because there are no other options, and the companies want to make as much cash as possible.

AIBs have basically no margin and are absolutely taken advantage of by Nvidia. They are just trying to survive at this point. RE: EVGA saga

Is there any reason not to buy an FE?

I’m mad in Europe because they are notoriously hard to get with decent RMA.

I use an open case and I swear all the AIB cards look like dogshit. Sure if you just put it in a case where it’s not too visible it’s totally fine.

Most PC components today look fine in comparison but GPUs are still an eyesore. The better looking ones are usually the budget stuff. Even Noctua brown is at least consistent and can look good in the right environment.

Add to this the fact that FEs are a lot more compact and it’s not even a contest. They just have a much more efficient cooler design.

I know margins are crap but that’s no excuse for the aesthetics.

Not sure if it's the same model, but when my radiator fans needed to be replaced, I picked up some black fans from Noctua and absolutely love how quiet they are in comparison. Next build I do may just have all Noctua fans to reduce noise, RGB be damned.

rkhbusa t1_j1earwz wrote

Noctua isn’t alone in the premium performance fan department anymore. Phanteks t30 and the new be quiet silent wings.

Personally I like the phanteks t30 they sport a slightly wider blade than traditional 120mm fans, so they’re already cheating the competition a little but at the end of the day they push more air but with their design they might not fit every application particularly in some cpu coolers where you might have a fan sandwiched in between two radiators. The fans themselves are of a much tighter tolerance than you’ll find in just about any ABS fan, glass fibre reinforced material is very recognizable across all three of the aforementioned manufacturers in their premium line and it has less play than ABS which you might find in an RGB fan. Both phanteks and be quiet have 3000rpm models a feature which is obtrusively loud to use but a nice to have just in case you ever repurpose your fans for anything else like making your own little server room or a drying cabinet, while the ceiling of 3000rpm is completely impractical for daily use I find my t30’s do hit a nice balance at 1800-2000rpm in my closed case with noise comparable to my old Corsair fans clapped out at 1400rpm while also pushing more air even if the rpm’s were even.

ChronWeasely t1_j18pava wrote

Yeah. It's literally in-stock at many places. Buy it from them with a warrantee, fast shipping, etc. Instead of a scalper if you want to put your $$$ on the bad value proposition that is the 4080

21

dimitriye98 t1_j19imar wrote

Scalpers are often leveraged. They'll use credit cards and other lines of credit to provide more operating capital. If they sit on it, those lines of credit remain heavily loaded, and A) they have to pay interest B) they have less capital to scalp other things. It's makes more sense for them to liquidate a losing investment than to keep losing money on it

NaN-Gram t1_j194f65 wrote

Supply is in better conditions than you think. In any case, 30 series cards are both in stock AND getting marked down. For what it’s worth, people who’ve been waiting this long are likely to hold out for a while longer.

speedypotatoo t1_j19hdzl wrote

No refund policies and no body going to buy a card without warranty

IAm-The-Lawn t1_j19od9h wrote

Combination of a lot of factors. There was pent up demand for the 30 series over the course of the past two years, and so lots of folks bought the 30s cards when the prices finally came down and supply improved. That is having an adverse impact on demand for the 40 series.

Additionally, the 40 series cards are significantly more expensive than the previous generation, so scalpers have a much smaller profit margin. Contrary to some beliefs, there is a maximum amount of money that 85% of individual consumers will spend on each card in the 40 series (we just don’t know what that amount is).

Finally, supply is pretty decent for the 40 series. Some retailers learned from the 30 series debacles with bots and scalping, so buying up all existing stock is not an option for scalpers. At best, they can only buy the majority of stock if they are so inclined.

Also worth noting that in some respects, supply chain logistics are recovering as well.

Damn, sorry to send you in the wrong direction there. Wait until after the holidays... and maybe tax return season.

They were in stock not but a month ago. I got an e-mail from New Egg that had Zotac and 2 other 4090's with a huge heading that said "4090's back in stock".

I suspect the disruption will square itself out when we all go back to our seasonal depression in February.

1

ZexMarquies01 t1_j1ywwiy wrote

lol, they were never "IN-STOCK". At least, not the way you think. They were in-stock for about 1 minute, at best.

Did those E-mails happen to tell you how MANY those site had in-stock? Having 1 or 1,000 both qualify as in-stock.

I had to follow a YT channel and Discord server that are made specifically to scrape most large retailers for in-stock 4090's. Every time one comes in stock, It goes out of stock within seconds. And whenever a site got any in-stock, It was only ever in small batches, And they'd space out the sale of them too. If they got 20 cards in, They'd sell 5 at a time, and drop each set of 5 like 10 - 20 minutes apart.

ZexMarquies01 t1_j1yw72z wrote

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Giub2JmpXhA

Go there, turn on volume. They alert you with audio, then post a link in the chat whenever a product they are watching comes instock.

Also, if you join their discord server, http://restockwatch.com/discord and Then scroll down to the 4090 channel, They are usually a few seconds faster at posting the link in Discord, as the YT video is about 30 seconds behind.

I was only on the YT channel and Discord for 2 days, before I got myself a Zotac 4090. It wasn't my preferred card, but it is a 4090.

EDIT: I should say, I got lucky. There are people that were sitting in the YT chat for weeks, trying to get a card. But they didn't use the discord channel, so I suspect that's why they could never get a card to go through the cart. So me getting a card in 2 days seems to be a bit of a rare / lucky case. OH and FYI, if you try this, Make sure you are already logged into the sites ( Amazon, Newegg, BestBuy etc..) and have your address and payment info already stored in their store. If you have to log-in whenever you try to buy one, or have to enter your CC info...you will NEVER get one.
