Ahhh, HOMM2, good times.
Should play the games again. Did a full storyline playthrough of the originals, from HOMM1-HOMM4 a couple of years back. Such a great time.
I still morn the loss of that universe. I never could get into HOMM5+. I had too much history baggage from the earlier games to start fresh with an arguably less interesting world.

I enjoyed HOMMV, it had a very cutesy and bright art style for a game with a dark tone. What it lacked it gameplay it made up with in character and a good story campaign.
VI however didn’t appeal to me in the trailer and I’ve never touched nor thought about it.

You should definitely check out Horn of the Abyss for HoMM3 if you haven't.
It's a pretty awesome mod that was made with a few of the original devs that adds a new faction and some QOL improvements like better resolutions for larger and higher quality displays, also (not to bury the lede) simultaneous turns, which is awesome when playing online with the added server list.

Oh, nice! I don't think I played the first one much but I was always fond of HoMMII. The third part is the most popular from what I've heard and I also liked IV with all its weirdness. I did try 5 and 6 but could never immerse that well. I can't even tell if they were good or bad because they weren't as memorable in my opinion.
I can, however, recommend the King's Bounty games (The Legend, Armored princess etc.) to scratch the itch a little. It obviously doesn't hit quite the same as HoMM but it has very similar combat.
