I agree. Bought one 600 a week ago. Not the best sound but a great standard and the looks are so timeless to me.

I would love a 650/660/6xx in the classic marble but don’t think it exists— just the 580/600 right?

I initially purchased and fell in love with the HD600 based off browsing here in this sub. The first amp recommended for me to pair with it was the Magni Piety, but I had already missed the launch, and eBay sellers are greedy as all get out. So I purchased a Magni+ and had been happy using that with my HD600. Now as of today I received my first stand-alone dac in the MMB2, and I also had delivered today a Magni Piety I purchased at an incredibly fair price from an incredibly kind fellow headphone hobbyist. This is my Happy-And-Content game. Someday I want a Vali 2++ to try a couple of tubes out, but I don’t want to go past that. This hobby easily turns into chasing down the next thing…I’m content and thankful.

If you got tube route, do something more obnoxious - Darkvoice 336i or Little Dot mk2. Still inexpensive but both have a very pronounced tube character. But really, take it from someone with a more high end rig built around the very similar HD650: you have total overkill with Piety and MMB2. I would just add some EQ to counteract the bass roll off, and the sound is just magical.

Still affordable? Good to know, ty

nah, the cheap tube amps like those two have poor quality control and are muddy. on the other hand, vali isn’t a great value because it just sounds like a solid state. i would recommend valhalla, a diy sangaku, or maybe a bottlehead crack if you like it really warm. that being said i got a piety too and it’s pretty great for the price so don’t get too much fomo

audiophile_lurker t1_j6iqw43 wrote

They specifically sound fairly muddy because they have a fair bit of THD that results from the use of tubes. Hence the suggestion. If trying to go for a fairly clear but still tubey sound, then Bottlehead Crack, Shortest Way 51+, or Woo Audio 6 - but those are all quite pricy comparing to budget OP is reasoning about.

Man I love that speckly paint job on the older HD600. So much character!

I remember when Fleckstone was evidence that you were in the apartment of a single dude who liked to spray-paint his furniture to make it match.

I remember when single dudes had apartments.

I remember when single dudes put time, money, and energy into making their apartments look what they considered good. They were wrong, but at least they tried, and were consistent.

I managed to get one and it pairs extremely well with HD650. Doesn’t leave me wanting more with the 650, which is the first time I can say that about an amp for them. A bit warm though, so not gonna be for everyone.

xGuacamolly t1_j6ben30 wrote

Nice match for the hd600 i guess, because it is less warm than the 650.

Great stack! Have the exact same DAC and AMP. In your opinion, how does the Magni+ compare to the Piety, sound-wise?

2

pavoid OP t1_j6ecoa8 wrote

The M+ sounds great and neutral, the MP sounds distinct. I prefer the MP sound because it is enjoyable to my ears. If you want just straight up as is or neutral sound, you might enjoy M+ more. They both sound great with the HD600 imo.

PitifulHospital7760 t1_j6edfh4 wrote

Yeah I prefer a tube-like euphoric sound. Hence why I got the Piety over the Magni+. I only wanted to go for the piety because I originally had a vali 2+ that was disappointingly not very tubey at all. The Piety is much more tube-sounding imo.

I pair my current stack with SDR modded HD800 if you were wondering.

pavoid OP t1_j6eeu99 wrote

Did you do any tube rolling with your Vali 2+? The hobbyists on Head-Fi have good things to say about the V2++ when you start tube rolling past the stock tube. Supposed to be a great little amp.

1

PitifulHospital7760 t1_j6ef26w wrote

I have, and it changed the sound minimally. Nothing made it MORE tube-like imo.

2

pavoid OP t1_j6efkxe wrote

RCA Command 5670 NOS was recommended to me. Another user told me they got the tube “holographic” quality they had been searching for when they tried that tube with the V2++. I have one of the RCA Command tubes and I’ll try it out when/if I ever get a V2++

Speaking from experience, the HD600 scales up really well. The better the amp and DAC, the better the sound. With my pair, I toggle between a Levinson integrated and a Sony headphone/DAC amp. With good lossless source material, yowsa! For the phones themselves, you can try different pads and/or upgrade the cables to balanced. I’m not an EQ guy, but I’ve never been disappointed with these great phones. I have others as well, but I always enjoy the HD600.
