I bought a used iPhone Xs Max and it said “Face ID does not work”. Now I was able to set up Face ID in settings and scan my face, but when I go to unlock it Ike that it does not read it, But it works in settings so how is it “broke” and can I fix? Thanks..

The screen was probably replaced with a non-genuine part. They disable Face ID on those devices.

No. From the description:

> For professional technicians only. All iPhones 11 forward will show non genuine screen message after changing display.

It’ll have the same issue. I’m pretty sure the only way to get faceid working properly again is to take to apple of an apple authorized repair shop

Yeah it’s not an 11 or later tho. It’s a 10. Although I am not a professional tech but I’ve done it on older iPhones. I’ll try to call them

I have heard about that but it seems like the original screen because it’s got some signs of use so it hasn’t been replaced. Could there be Any other possible reason? (I’m probably wrong it’s probably replaced you’re right)

Someone could have also replaced the camera module. I don't think the screen is the only official part that can cause them to nerf the phone.

For what it's worth, this shouldn't be legal. People should be allowed to repair their devices with independent source parts. If you can only get something fixed by the company that makes it, that's a s***** dystopian society where nobody actually owns anything

I agree. We should be able to repair ourselves with no repercussions. Now I have a phone that doesn’t have Face ID 😑

Sometimes they nerf it. If people replace the cameras or screen. They call it a safety feature, but it's often seen as an effort to undermine independent repair.

But that's just speculation, there could be infinite reasons why it's not working in your case. But if you bought it used or refurbished, it's probably some kind of software lock to the camera and it needs to be either the original camera that came with the phone or repaired by Apple so they can connect it m
