That’s what I thought too when the news just broke. Everyone that lives in JC knows there are cameras everywhere, leaving the scene makes things way worse. That, or she had a body in the trunk

This article is paywalled for me but the fact it took her several hours to report it to the police definitely had me wondering about this.

There’s not a whole lot to that article:

> I’m new to living in Hudson County, but I must say I’m impressed by the well-greased machine of sleaze they have built here in Jersey City after attending my first meeting of the city council on Wednesday.

> It came one day after Councilwoman Amy DeGise, part of the political royal family here, was found guilty of smashing her SUV into a bicyclist who had passed a red light in July, sending him careening off her windshield and flipping through the air, and fleeing the scene. A video shows that she didn’t even tap the brakes to see if the guy was bleeding from his ears. She sped away while he was still on the ground.

And a CCTV photo just before the collision.

More of a water cooler musing than an article, really

Wasn’t the timeframe 8:30 in the morning though? There must be statistics on this stuff, is 8:30AM a common “get in my car drunk” time?

If you’re an alcoholic, at 8:30 you might be late for get drunk in my car time.

We’ve all seen old men lining up outside old man bars at an early hour in bright sunshine. No way to lead a life.

Only Shamey Amy knows if she was drunk or if that's why she drove off, but it certainly seems possible.

EyesOnImprovement OP t1_j6jl8r7 wrote

I don't think she was drunk or high, I think she fled for other reasons but by not giving a reason at all Amy opens herself up to conjecture as to why she did it.

It was a bit creepy that she didn't flinch or react at all. It was like she was in a trance while driving.

If she was under the influence of something, then she took a calculated risk and it paid off for her. I think fleeing the scene is a smaller punishment (both legal and political) than a drunk driving charge.

Rumor is she was smoking a crack pipe with male prostitutes in the car.

The area of crime is a really rough part of the city. I would assume she was high OR doing something with her phone and didn't see. She kept going because yeah IF she had gotten out she would have been flipped the f out at. What's extremely terrible is that area is a block from a school and has 3 daycares on those corners. She easily could have hit a kid. She was going a ridiculous speed for that neighborhood. There are lots and lots of people walking around at that time and even 25 is hard to manage between traffic and pedestrians.

Blecher_onthe_Hudson t1_j6kcfem wrote

I actually clocked her speed from the video and she was only doing 25.

diaperbuyer t1_j6kfyxd wrote

Forgot it was in July... so probably not as many kids since they don't all go to the summer programs. But still alot of people.

I drive that block every single day and It is extremely hard to even go 25. Especially that time of day. People running to catch the light rail or bus on the next corner. Lots of kids walking around to the school the next block. You have to have a complete disregard for humans and the neighborhood to drive that speed at that time. I drive down it around the same time too. Maybe another time when less people are walking around idk. But not that time.

25mph is the speed for school zones, it’s a perfectly reasonable speed to be traveling at IMO. I think it’s a little ridiculous to say that someone traveling at 25mph has a “complete disregard for humans”

2

diaperbuyer t1_j6l7e0d wrote

I absolutely disagree. Simple. Do you drive that block? There are people everywhere. Driving down a residential block with multiple schools a light rail and bus stops with ALOT of people walking around is being a terrible driver. And approaching an intersection this is driving in a city 101. There is no excuse for it. Defend her all you f*ing like but it's being a TERRIBLE driver and yes a DISREGARD for humans. AGAIN drive that block and there are humans all over the place. It's not a quiet block in the least bit. It's called being aware of your surroundings.... being a neighbor and living in a city.

1

Dabookadaniel t1_j6leglq wrote

Alright, let’s calm down. I wasn’t defending her, I was just disagreeing with what you said about 25mph being some egregious disregard for the safety of pedestrians. It’s a perfectly reasonable speed and an attentive driver would have more than enough time to stop for any pedestrians in the road. This incident wasn’t a result of her speed, it was a result of her being distracted.

1

diaperbuyer t1_j6lfp82 wrote

nope....... it's not a reasonable speed. You can waste your time replying back but I'm still going to say it's not possible because AGAIN I drive that street every day. You have to be a jerk to go that speed and more on that block. Simple there are people jaywalking every which way and depending on the time of day you either have kids crossing or addicts passing out or stopping mid cross. It ain't possible UNLESS you just don't give a sh*t about humans. Either way she's an ass for driving that fast no sober person would. See for your self and drive down that block. Then tell me I'm wrong so I can calm down for you 🙄🙄🙄.
