I think it’s safe to say that Boston traffic, while bad, is far away from being 4th worst in the world. The study basically covers cities in Europe and North America. I have a hard time believing Mexico City is better, but it’s been a while since I last sat in traffic there. There’s tens of cities in Asia with way worse traffic than anything I’ve seen in the west.

I lived in Bangalore/Bengaluru for 2 years. Like most westerners there I had a company car with a paid driver. My commute to the office was 6 or so miles. I remember several occasions when I decided to walk home instead of sitting in the endless traffic - and beating our driver to our house on foot. Most of the people who worked in my organization had over 3 hour long commute - one way!

Yeah that checks out from what I heard - I also doubt it’s taking into account how safe and, comparably, orderly and well paved our roads are when comparing it to ALL cities worldwide. Traffic here sucks, but we can also maintain a healthy dose of perspective.

I have to go to Logan on Monday morning. We're going to leave around 3:30 AM.
I was in Boston this past Monday and the prior Tuesday to drop off and pick up at South Station.
I normally drive in once or twice a week to maintain my mother's house. It is actually pretty easy if you can pick and choose the time of travel. After 7 PM going into Boston is usually fine. Arriving before 5 AM is usually fine too. There are some times of the day where you are usually okay.
It used to be that the rush hour was just an hour but now it's like three hours.

That's 12 1/2 hours out of your life each week or about 625 hours (or 26 days) a year. That's a decent chunk of time that you could be using for other things that you may enjoy more.
We all have to do what we have to do but sometimes it feels like it's time to leave the rat race.
My longest commute was an hour but I was a contractor back then and I knew that it would only be for a couple of months. My job from the mid-1980s to 2020 had a commute of 20 minutes or less. That still adds up to a lot of time but it was a relaxing drive as there was no traffic to deal with.

Luckily I can work remote so I mainly do that - because you’re right, 2.5-3 hours in traffic a day is not a good way to spend time 5x per week. So I go into the office once or twice a week

My son has the same issue. He goes in once every 2-3 months. I think that their normal requirement is once a month but the pandemic changed that. He had to work in the office daily when he started out but could work remotely after two years.

Ok let's think about this...most people in the city take/have access public transportation and parking is a nightmare. Most of the traffic is from 128 out/into the city where public transportation is severely lacking... sorry no one is biking/walking in 15 degree weather to get into the city....

Bike and pedestrian infrastructure is for people already inside the city. It used to be normal for people inside the city to drive everywhere but that's been changing (due to better infrastructure)
For outside the city, they need to expand commuter rails and probably create a commuter bus system for the directly surrounding areas.
There is no way to solve the passenger vehicle traffic issue in Boston without lowering the amount of cars used.

It was never normal for people who live in Boston to drive everywhere. People complain about the cost of living in Boston, no less that added expense of a parking space etc that isn’t needed.
The cars are Uber and people from outside the city.
The bike lanes are competing with public transportation.

Boston’s street traffic is compounded by the streets matching the contours of the original waters edge and then the harbor/rivers subsequently filled in and more streets added. On top of that, Boston is made up of annexed towns that each have their own street layout now combined into one city.
The highway system in Mass is half-assed. There should be at least 3 more highways going into/through Boston (Rt2/US 3, I-95, I-695). Not saying they should have been built but the current highways were designed with more in mind.
When they converted the highway funds to transit, The extension of the Red and Orange lines in the 70/80s could have helped, but again the effort was half assed. The red line extension stopped at Alewife instead of going out to Lexington and the Orange line stopped at Forest hills/Oak Grove instead of 128 Canton and Reading respectively.

If boston had 5-6 highways going into the city there wouldn't be a city center it would just be highways and parking lots. If you dream of cities like this you can visit literally anywhere in middle america of the west coast that isn't chicago

In fairness, the it didn't make sense to extend the Red Line into a wealthy rural town filled with single family homes on massive lots. They should have considered the Waltham route for the Red Line Extension. At least Downtown Waltham and the South Side are built up enough to justify rapid transit service, and the line could've served two college canpuses - Brandeis and Bentley University

Ground it. Route through traffic via 128. Passengers going into Boston should use the T, which should be overhauled. And before anyone says "but muh work truck" I didn't say eliminate it. You can still drive in if you have a bunch of stuff. Same for shipping. Most car traffic is just passengers.

The only time that Rush hour doesn't exist is between the hours of 10am-12pm now. Every damn day there's some accident.
Not to mention the weird drivers that feel the need to drive 40 mph in all three lanes for no reason, thus causing slow downs.
