Unpopular opinion (maybe): I hate it when famous singers use their fame and influence to force themselves in Hollywood. Just let real actors and film creatives who don’t have your fame have a chance. It’s already too difficult as it is, and now they have to compete against famous people who decided on a whim some Sunday night that they wanted to be in Hollywood.

On the other hand though, The Weeknd’s attachment to this film may be one of the reasons why it’s even able to get made. I’m sure that Shults, whose last few films basically came and went, will enjoy the exposure that’ll come with having a film starring The Weeknd under his belt, as it’ll probably allow him to keep making his smaller films.

You would think Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan being attached to this would be enough they are quickly becoming the top rising actors in the industry.

I don’t know how to feel about The Weeknd his talent level in terms of acting is undetermined right now he does have a HBO show with Sam Levinson that’s supposed to release this year though.

Per the article, it sounds like Keoghan and Ortega became attached after The Weeknd’s involvement, as he and Shults had been working on the film together for quite sometime before reaching out to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Weeknd’s attachment is what helped get this film on Ortega and Keoghan’s radar.

All of the Weeknd's music videos are pretty much works of art.

His sensibilities seem to align with auteurs like Trey Edward Shults and Safdie Brothers (Uncut Gems supporting role).

Well, the guy I replied to is making a valid point. It does happen a lot and it’s been going on for way too long. If you’re not a fan of The Weeknd I can see why his role in this movie’s development could come across like just another celeb looking for Hollywood money.

The Weeknd is a huge movie buff and also is making his own HBO show right now. Not saying that qualifies him, but his heart is there.

I'm an old fuck (by internet standards) and also a weeknd fan, but I am actually a pretty recent fan. My first actual contact with something weeknd was when I saw him in Uncut Gems and read the whole discussion about him playing a younger version of himself whatever. I liked him in the movie.

Then he did after hours and dawn fm which are both great 80s throwbacks for an old fuck like me and I became a fan.

Check out his original mixtapes (most easily found as the album Trilogy). They're more standard R&B than his later stuff, but it's some of the best standard R&B ever recorded.

High For This goes unfathomably fucking hard and might actually be my favorite album opener of all time.

I mean is he really forcing himself into hollywood, if he is the one that started developing this movie? It's not like he stole anyone's part, he created it himself.

As long as they're talented and put in good performances, I don't really care where they come from. Lady Gaga is really good. Harry Styles is okay, he can always get better.

David Bowie was great as Nikola Tesla in the Prestige and it's no surprise he was Denis Villeneuve's first choice to play Niander Wallace in Blade Runner.

Also studios and producers want to make money and if they think a singer is going to sell more tickets than that's what they'll go with.
