The real question is if there will be any sort of dance number performed. They wouldn't be able to mimick the movie obviously but hopefully some sort of adaptation of it. The energy comes from the dancing. It would be awesome so see them make a go of it

Between this and David Byrne singing the EEAAO song, I'm hoping there will be some decent musical performances at the Oscars.

I guess Oscars are trying to get back on the horse by adding more foreign audiences instead of focusing on quality huh

For the actual Original Song nominees they tend to perform as written. We Don’t Talk About Bruno wasn’t nominated, it was just an exhibition ratings ploy and they tried to do some kind of remix that really sucked. I don’t think the RRR songwriters would allow them to do that with Naatu Naatu, nor would the producers want to since it’s an actual nominee.

So I had heard about RRR when it got brought up on a couple random "best of" lists and it was on Netflix so I decided to give it a try.

I'd never actually seen a Bollywood/Tollywood movie before but I was familiar with the over the top-ness that's common and music and dance numbers.

I watched the first hour, and frankly was kind of bored. There were a couple of the crazy action sequences I was expecting but it felt like not much was happening and taking forever to get anywhere. I turned it off and went and did something else.

Couple days later was looking for something to watch and decided to fire RRR back up and give it a second chance picking up where I left off. Ten minutes later was the Naatu dance sequence. I was like, "Alright movie, that was a lot of fun, you got me back in" and then overall I will say I ultimately enjoyed the movie. I do think it's too long still, but yeah, overall solid film.

Less and less people care about the Oscars, because they stopped focusing on quality and their rewards are based around other things like representation and virtue signaling, instead of great movies. Instead of getting back to giving awards purely based on quality, they're moving to include markets that are traditionally not represented at the Oscars to draw in a new audience.

Don't get me wrong, if I were them I'd probably do the same as it's easier and makes sense business-wise, but I don't think we'll see much uptick in viewership from US/European markets.

I don't get it. The song isn't even that good, it's repetitive, heavily autotuned, and there are far better dance numbers throughout Indian cinema.

It sure is a good thing RRR happened to be one of the best films of 2022 then, isn't it

There's a lot of fun storylines going into the Oscars this year.

It probably won't improve it's dwindling popularity but it's fun for people who are movie enthusiasts.

While thr popularity has undoubtedly receded, there's an extent tonehich broadcast TV numbers are a really dumb way to measure that. It's possible that there is more coverage and discussion of the Oscars than in many years, thar engagement just isn't monetizable by ABC. The Oscars locked into a billion dollar contract with broadcast ststion righbefor thr bottom dropped out from pretty much that entire medium.

This is an actual effect used in some dance performance videos, especially kpop! Yes, they slow down the music and perform at the slower tempo before syncing it up in post. But it usually gives a sort of stop motion effect in the process that I didn’t notice when watching the performance in RRR. I honestly do not think they slowed down the performance in any way on set. I’m wondering if they show it at a higher frame rate to give it a motion blur effect?

This better be huge and bombastic and include as many dancers as possible. Naatu Naatu deserves nothing less

I personally would rather they not show the song performances. Typically, they're the least interesting aspect of the film. I'd rather have longer acceptance speeches, tributes, and cinema-focused reels, etc..

This is the Oscars performance from the year Slumdog Millionaire was nominated (this is the best quality vid I could find). I couldn’t quite remember how large scale this was from when I watched it the night it aired, but I remembered it being more than just A R standing alone and singing.

Edited: I found a much better clip after I posted this.

Wait did RRR get an Oscar? Did I miss something? I didn't say anything about that movie, I'm just saying they're opening to Indian audiences instead of focusing on what they traditionally did. I don't quite understand how Oscars, being based in the US and being comprised of mostly US critics trying to become the end-all be-all critical body of the world is a good thing but okay. Seems a lot of diversity would be lost but sure whatever floats your boat.

−14

lifesthateasy t1_jaes30j wrote

Yeah that's my point, the Oscars used to be about mostly English speaking movies from the US with specific categories for foreign films. Now they're opening into foreign markets more. Now you be the judge if it's good or bad for diversity if the ultimate body to judge any movie anywhere has a fully USA-based panel of judges.

−5

lifesthateasy t1_jaesg99 wrote

"The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit for the American film industry." Traditionally they do American movies with some categories for foreign films, but not nearly as many. Now it seems instead of focusing on better nominations for American movies, they add new markets. As I said, it's a good business move but I'm not sure I like the idea of a US-based panel of judges being the end-all be-all authorities on international cinema everywhere. Goes a bit against diversity doesn't it.

If you look, on any of the Netflix thumbnails it says "RRR Hindi" not just "RRR." So I guess they must have only gotten the US rights to the Hindi dubbed version? It's very odd.

The original language is Telugu, and unfortunately is not available on Netflix in the US. If you want to watch it in Telugu legally in the US, there's a streaming service called ZEE5 that has it, or if you have an Alamo Drafthouse theater near you, it's playing on Sunday this weekend.

I'm not a very big supporter of illegally watching movies, but this seems like a circumstance where it is pretty justified. I don't understand why they'd put it out on Netflix without the original language, but here we are.

Licensing fuckery, pretty much. The IP holders figured they could get more money out of the movie by compartmentalizing each of the dubs as its own licensing deal, and they were probably correct.

Oof, I've been intending to watch it but this is a problem. I was present when a friend of mine watched it, but they don't mind dubs. I was like, when I watch it I'll watch the original, as I do as a rule. I didn't realize it would actually be hard to do.

3

arcosapphire t1_jaf29l0 wrote

I don't understand Telugu or Hindi, but the dubbing bothered me. As I said, I saw it partially, and decided that when I gave it a proper watch I would find the original. I really hate dubs. Think of how much direction goes into getting just the right delivery from an actor. Then a dub comes along and just...bulldozes right over that.

Interestingly, I think the reason the speeches are like that is because they have such limited time. I watched some of the SAG Award acceptance speeches, and they didn't cut off any of them as they didn't have to worry about commercials. The speeches in turn were more heartfelt than the rushed name lists you're talking about, because they had time to both acknowledge the people they wanted to and say what they actually wanted to say.

awesomesauce1030 t1_jaf2k9m wrote

I understand what you're saying and I agree. I guess this one just didn't bother me as much as I expected. It's all preference anyway.

Good luck finding the Telugu version, and enjoy it when you find it, the movie is a lot of fun!
