I was introduced to the horror genre mainly through found footage movies such as "As Above So Below" and "Blair Witch" so now I'm branching out to other types of horror movies since I'm reallly enjoying this stuff. Recently I've seen The Thing, Halloween (my favorite), Scream, A Nightmare on Elmstreet, Friday the 13th, Predator, Alien (and most of these series following movies and sequels). Looking forward to any and all suggestions - thank you!

The Fog is great. I think I like its theme more than Halloween, honestly.

The exorcist is a movie i regret watching at a young age. Its one of the most unsettling films, its been 20+ years since I watched it and plenty of the scenes from that movie are still seared into my brain.

The first half is arguably as horrific as the actual horror elements to me.

I’m still not over the spider walk scene. And her pissing herself. Excellent movie though.

I recently watched Carpenter’s The Thing and I was floored at how amazing it was! Everything from the suspenseful atmosphere, to the effects to the story. Truly a fantastic choice.

I've got to imagine that was really awesome to see in theaters but likewise between the rotating stuff in the room scene and the fact I saw so many spoofs of it before the original film it didn't quite work for me.

Suspiria (1977) and The Wicker Man (1973) are my recommendations.
Edit: oh, and Obayashi's House. It's not strictly horror, but it's a fun and weird ride.

You can definitely ignore Mother of Tears, though.

Audition is a Takashi Miike film, right? If it's the one I'm thinking it is, I've been meaning to watch it. I just want to read the novel first.

Yeah it’s Takashi Miike. TIL it’s based on a novel.
FussyBirdTV t1_iuj27kv wrote
High tension YEEEESS! If the opening scene of that movie doesn't get you to turn your TV off you should be able to make it through the whole thing. What a fuckin ride that movie!
TotesObviThrwawy t1_iuhv65o wrote
If you're wanting to go really classic, and maybe as a nice palate cleanser to a lot of the suggested films, give one or two of the old Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff films a watch.
Then enjoy Plan 9 from Outer Space.
And while decidedly not horror, enjoy washing it all down with Ed Wood.

You need to watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Best movie ever made. Then you can skip the sequels for now (they don't really follow a real linear storyline anyways) and watch the remake. Evil Dead is a great trilogy. The remake of Night of the Living Dead is better than the original in some ways, that's also a series that doesn't really follow a storyline through the series so you can watch in any order. Waxwork from the 80s is always a fun watch. American Gothic isn't really a gore or slasher but it's definitely a mind fuck. The Sleep away Camp series is great for 80s gore.... If Halloween is your favorite it sounds like you'll prefer 80s slashers so look from there.
themeatbridge t1_iuhtogq wrote
I always like to warn people about Evil Dead 2. Like if you watch them back to back, you're going to wonder why you're watching the same movie but funny. Both are great, and I don't recommend skipping either. But it's good to know going in.
yahwehsruse82 t1_iuhtzs5 wrote
Warning- they lost the rights to the original movie so instead of using flashbacks and scenes from the first one they kind of rewrote it and used the rewrite for the first part of the movie. (There, he's been warned lol)
