Some of my most memorable experiences at the cinema were when I went by myself. I remember just having the overall excitement of watching John Wick 3 or SpiderMan ITSV completely overtaking the initial anxiety of going in there alone.

In my experience, once you set your mind to wanting to enjoy the film you want to see, that should help the most. After all, you’re watching it for yourself, not the people in there. Enjoy the showing!!

okay_ya_dingus t1_iu99imn wrote

Just think through the worst possible scenario. Maybe the ticket counter person has their own issues (I’m imagining like a Mean Girl Teenager?) and questions you condescendingly for buying just one ticket.

If that happened, which one of you do you think actually has something to be embarrassed about? You who just wants to see a movie, or that person who acts unkindly towards a stranger?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with or embarrassing about seeing a movie alone, know that in your heart and let it give you confidence.

Social stigma!?!?!?!?

Not anymore... it was stupid back in the day but nowadays no one gives a fuck.

One thing to remember, though, is that you can't have that aftermovie "buzz" conversation, which is definitely something I miss compared to when I go with people. You won't have anyone to talk to about it!

The movies are a place where you sit in the dark and it’s rude to talk so if anything I feel like it’s a better place to go alone than most! I also have severe social anxiety to the extent that I’ve passed out - but I see the movies as the easiest place to not be judged. Again, it’s in the dark and not a place to socialize. I used to have amc pass and I went to movies alone 3ish times a week. Go and have fun!

Goose9719 t1_iu9b5i2 wrote

I started doing stuff solo in 2017, but it was only a few moments cause I didn't have the confidence and at the time all my friends were in different states. By 2019, I was going to the cinemas by myself constantly because I either had no one around or the people I did just didn't have an interest in seeing some of these movies.

That feeling of being judged still exists sometimes even now, but you keep challenging it and reminding yourself you're not the only one doing it, and it's actually become more common I'd say.

When your anxiety hits you, just remember that it's okay to feel that way, but you deserve to enjoy yourself. So I hope you end up going and enjoy yourself if you can!

In college I would go to the movies by myself quite often. It was especially nice if I had a gap in classes, I could catch the early showing of a movie at the matinee prices and beat the crowd.

Even now, if there’s a movie I want to see, and my wife doesn’t want to see it, I’ll just go by myself. Last one I went to see alone was Top Gun.

It’s about YOUR experience. You want to see the movie, go see the movie. I promise you, people aren’t looking at you or judging you as much as you think, if at all. If I saw someone at the movies by themselves, I wouldn’t think twice about it.

Yeah I go every so often by myself. I enjoy it. No one cares I think. We always assume people are judging us but really how often are you judging others? You barely think of them right? Same in reverse for the most part. Also I worked at a cinema when I was younger. Lots of people go alone. It’s not a thing nobody does. What even happens that I found strange at first is people would come in alone and watch a kids movie cause it was the next one on. I remember the guy I worked with, as I had just started, go yeah that normal, some people just love going to the movies. Enjoy the popcorn 🍿 all to yourself 😉

Going with friends is fun and I'll always do that if I can but at the end of the day, the entire point is that I want to see the movie. If someone is gonna judge me for that, fuck them because that makes no sense

Hopefully this helps you feel at ease; I used to be similar, growing up if I didn’t go to the movies with someone I didn’t see the movie, and I was missing out on a lot of films I really wanted to see, simply because my friends had no interest and it may have felt a bit awkward. Then The Lego Movie came out and I desperately wanted to see it, friends didn’t, so I finally went by myself and had an absolute blast.

To me, going to the movies alone is arguably better sometimes, it’s pretty much a solo activity if you think about it, you’re not really holding a conversation or doing much else, you’re quietly watching a movie. Once I looked at it that way in my head the anxiety faded and I enjoyed going to the theater a lot more, I’ve probably gone more by myself than with others over the past ten years tbh.

Just go and enjoy yourself! I promise the person thinking most about you going alone is you, and once you come to terms with that you’ll enjoy it a lot more as well. Good luck to you and enjoy the movies!
