I'll be completely honest. As someone who once would have never skipped a Marvel movie, I'm significantly more excited for this than I am for Quantumania. This is my most anticipated movie of the first quarter.

Either way, you'll hit your Jonathan Majors quota.

In the trailer for Quantumania, Kang's suit is damaged, revealing Jonathan Majors' swole arm. Kang then uses it to choke Scott Lang. It's the closest we've got so far.

There is no Jonathan Majors quota. There is a Jonathan Majors REQUIREMENT.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I’m not going to Creed looking for anything but the same rocky beats that have worked in every film but V for me and Creed II delivered on that.

I think it might be an homage to the season 1 cover for Hajime no Ippo, "the fighting".

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0481256/

iirc Jordan is an anime fan and has mentioned Ippo in interviews.

ProbsWrongbutDefMean t1_j6jwnog wrote

I think your tone justified. The poster is pretty bad. Its too, flat? His face looks like a sticker pasted on. Some how the cartoon has more depth to it.

7

joeFacile t1_j6m31v9 wrote

This poster, the angle, the lighting, pose, framing, colors… all seem generic to me. Also the cover you linked to barely looks like the Creed III poster.

Lastly, movie posters are made by the distributor. MB Jordan had 0 say in it. This is most likely a still frame taken from the footage they shot, that was then over-sharpened and heavily color corrected. There’s no room for "a nice, mindful homage to X" in the case of Hollywood movie posters. It’s a sweatshop and its only goal is to maximize the $$$

I get that this poster reminded you of Hajime’s poster, but to say there’s any relation between the two is quite the stretch IMHO.

24

stumpcity t1_j6itwjl wrote

Was already excited to see what Jordan does with full creative control here, and to see how this story plays out without any of Stallone's weird self-fetishizing being hamfistedly inserted into the narrative (Creed II).

And then you add Jonathan Majors looking more ripped than 1982 Stallone and weathers COMBINED...

...and then add that Jordan said the fight scene choreography was inspired by BOXING ANIMES.

top this all off with another Ludwig Goransson score? I'm all in.

20

Rocket_Popsicle t1_j6iywuh wrote

Would you mind explaining what you mean by "self-fetishizing" in Creed II? I'm not trying to argue, I love these movies, and I just can't think of what you're referring to.

20

stumpcity t1_j6j0y5j wrote

It's a key compontent to Stallone's whole career, and honestly part of the reason that career consistently goes way up and way down. He's a tremendously solipsistic creator.

Basically - Creed worked the way it did because he had minimal (if any) creative involvement. Creed II (didn't) work the way it did because MGM didn't want to wait for Coogler and handed the series back over to Stallone. And Stallone essentially wrote a Rocky sequel, not a Creed one.

−25

JazzMusicFestival t1_j6j20sg wrote

Coogler didn't want to return AT ALL. It has nothing to do with waiting for him.

And the story for Creed 2 with the Dragos pretty much was going to happen.

19

stumpcity t1_j6j3woh wrote

What does any of that have to do with me explaining Stallone's consistent descents into unentertaining solipsism as the primary creative choice?

"Dragos" wasn't an inevitability at all. It was simply the first idea Stallone had pop into his head, and so it was the only idea he ever pursued. And it shows.

−21

typesett t1_j6jddkj wrote

yah but Dragos is a Rocky foe

i think Coogler would have preferred not touching Rocky people at all. although this new story reminded me of Tommy Morrison one

10

thunder-thumbs t1_j6ktame wrote

What on earth are you talking about with solipsism? I know what it means but I don’t know what you mean.

6

stumpcity t1_j6kvqp0 wrote

If you know what it means there shouldn’t be any misunderstanding then. Dunno how else to describe it than with an easily understood word you admit you understand.

−4

GoddamnCarolBaskin t1_j6ls22c wrote

The great irony is that this was a d always has been Stallone's franchise. Creed would not exist without Rocky and it's kinda weird he was pushed out of his own franchise

3

Rocket_Popsicle t1_j6j1dxz wrote

Oh okay I got you now! I love Creed II, honestly, but I see what you're referring to. Adonis has sort of like a mental breakdown and Rocky has to keep bridging the gap in their relationship to pull him out of it, right?

5

Old_Understanding325 t1_j6jgx3g wrote

I just can't get into this Rocky spinoff. Maybe it's because I don't find the character all that interesting and charismatic.

9

ataridonkeybutt t1_j6jwmpv wrote

Same problem here. I love the idea, I loved Apollo Creed, I was hyped for this franchise... but the Adonis Creed character reminds me of Henry Cavill in the Superman movies. There just isn't much there. Apollo had charisma, envy, and a fun sense of theatricality. That's why this third one looks engaging, because the villain appears to be bringing that Apollo-style charisma and entertainment this time. In the other two, both Adonis and his opponents were just kind of vaguely "serious", so the matchups felt devoid of personality, like BvS.

9

AsimovLiu t1_j6k2k1q wrote

The spirit is kinda there, but what really helped the Rocky movies is the music. Bill Conti's original score (Gonna Fly Now, Going The Distance, The Final Bell, Redemption) and some great pieces (Eye of the Tiger, No Easy Way Out, Burning Heart, Training Montage, Hearts On Fire) added so much intensity and emotion to the scenes, it was very important. However in Creed it's mostly horrible rap, and the OST by Ludwig Göransson isn't up to Conti's. There is no memorable music piece. It might not seems like much but think about Star Wars without Williams. It's simply not as good.

9

DonCreech t1_j6k8r5t wrote

It might have just been a rumor, but weren't they considering using disco music for the Star Wars soundtrack? That would have been... interesting.

2

brettmgreene t1_j6nxe7t wrote

No, disco wasn't considered. George Lucas cut the film to existing classical music before hiring John Williams at the suggestion of Steven Spielberg.

1

crono14 t1_j6l20pe wrote

I think to is that the first Rocky at least spent a lot more time with Rocky in his daily life. He was a poor dude, and his life was hard.

It's been quite a while since I saw the first Creed but the guy had a nice office job and seemingly the support of Apollo's wife to where he really had no reason to fight other than to live up to the Creed name but he also fears it. Rocky on the other hand HAD to fight to survive and even when we see him he's struggling.

I liked the first Creed movie enough but yeah there are no memorable songs that just brings is all together.

MeCritic t1_j6mh410 wrote

Creed was the best possible ,,restart/reboot" in movie history. Cooglar, Jordan and Sly did amazing job on every single level. With the best possible music from Ludwig... It was the movie of the year, the greatest homage for all the fans of Rocky franchise. I still cannot decide whatever I love more Rocky, Rocky Balboa or Creed. But maybe that was it. They should have stop. Or at least for another ten years...

Creed 2 was the worst possible Rocky movie. It's even worse than Rocky V which is really bad movie. Creed 2 goes against all the principles of how Rocky movies should be structured. It miss all the opportunities to make it really great, stunning and emotional. Sometimes it even doesn't make any sense. It doesn't even have the cinematography of the first one, the feeling, depression or really moving music (hip-hop/rnb). It was really a disaster. (And now this director should restart the TF franchise... oh, good luck)

So now I think Creed 3 won't be worse than that. But everything suggest it will be a really mediocre movie, and I would love to be wrong. I will be more than happy if Jordan's debut will be a fire. But the trailer didn't convince me much. It looks just ,,I created a monster, now I need to beet him". But it's all too ,,black". I don't want to be rude or something. I love all the actors in it (like Jordan is my favourite, Tessa is fantastic and Jonathan looks like a future of movie industry), but Rocky's franchise was always about everyone... mostly black and white persons. In the latest trailer for Creed III, there are no white people... Rocky franchise is very popular in Europe, but this will flop here immidiately. My parents are huge fans of this whole franchise. They even go to the premiere of Creed and Creed II, but this one will miss.
