NJNG - Gas - $88 / month on budget plan. 2400 sq. Ft. Well insulated split level with southern exposure.
That's amazing. Everything in the house is on natural gas?
stove, hot water, dryer and forced air heat. Here is from Dec 2021 usage graph - working remotely no access to recent bill, but similar graph. - https://imgur.com/gallery/K1DaXQJ
Middletown
Electric $112 / monthly
I’m not on gas, but my electric bill is between $350 - $450 per month. 2020 sq ft, on a Mitsubishi heat pump, water heater is electric, and we have two Teslas. The only gas appliance we have, for now, is our propane dryer. Figured I’d throw that in because people might be curious about the difference.
Have you looked at solar? I heard the incentives have gone up this year.
I have, unfortunately nobody wants to touch my roof. It’s metal tile, so drilling into it is a no-go.
Why not try a heat pump dryer?
They only come in smaller sizes. Once the dryer is done for, I’ll switch to electric.
How big is the Mitsubishi? Whole house one?
Yeah whole house. It’s a MXZ-5C42NAHZ, so it’s a HyperHeat model, with two air handlers, one for the first floor, one for the second. It works very well and only starts working hard when it’s below about 10 degrees.
Are you sure your gas bill isn’t for two months or something?
$600 bill at $1.24 a therm comes to 483 therms in a month, which comes to 48.3 million BTUs. A house your size would have 110k BTU furnace, even at 120k BTU that kind of gas load is having that furnace or boiler running flat out 12 hours a day all month long, plus like 2 hours of stove/dryer a day. The weather hasn’t been nearly that cold for that to be happening.
I’d say something is wrong with you bill, possible misread on the meter, something like that.
Edit: forgot about delivery charges.
You're paying $0.56/therm? Up here in north Jersey, if you add supply, delivery, and rebalancing together, it comes out to $1.24/therm!
Yeah forgot about the delivery. Thanks for pointing that out.
1800sqft. It’s terribly insulated, so we spend about $250-450 a month in propane during the cold months.
Propane is used only for heat, everything else in the house is electric.
Southern Burlington county.
I’m in Bergen County with PSEG. ~$168 for natural gas per month for a ~2300sqft split level. 2x gas furnaces, gas water heater, gas dryer, gas cooktop, and gas bbq grill. Reinsulated and air sealed our attic 2 years ago and we keep our house at 69°F.
Around $200 a month for a 1,400 sq house. PSE&G...gas runs the water heater, range/oven and the furnace. Our heat doesn't actually run a lot because we use our wood burning stove mostly when home. Heat is set at 66 and only runs when sleeping. We have an older home from the 1950's so it's a little drafty.
Most homes don’t have a wood burning stove anymore.
It was installed in 2017, so it's possible to help the costs of heating a home. I love it.Also, not everyone in NJ lives in suburbia or a city, there are still some of us country folk left.
I love wood stoves, especially because you can leave a pot of water on it to help add humidity.
$120/mo, 1,900 Sq ft rancher.
Between $150-$300 ($300 for coldest month) for winter months, and $30-$50 all other months for a 1700sq ft home. Gas stove, dryer, and heat.
My house is 2880 sq. ft. and our gas bill ranges from $200 in the winter to $100 or less the rest of the year. I'm on the cusp of Middlesex and Mercer counties.
1100 sqft 2 floors $20 but thats because I'm only paying for hot water and cooking gas thanks to a heat pump mini split system . I will never stop recommending them lol . I should probably mention electric is $110 thanks to that and an EV
Lake Hopatcong area was $118 most recent bill ~2000 sqft. Replaced windows last year and resided with 1/2 foam panels under the siding. Was $170 same time last year. Been rockin out with the caulk out on really cold days and sealing up whatever I can.
NJNG, 2300 sq feet, been paying ~$300 a month this winter.
$90 last month for a 1000 sq ft cape cod. Gas water heater, dryer, and range.
2000 sq feet. 141 per month on budget plan. we also pay the 35/month for the maintenance play.
huge jump from 2022. budget was 100/month
we could be doing better on insulation.
1700 sqft multi-level townhouse, we spend about $100-$150 a month in the cold months. This year it's been a little higher than $150 though with the massive rate increases. Insulation isn't great - gas furnace, stove, and dryer
Wow electric heat sounds cheap compared to this..

$600 seems insanely high. Maybe need to reinsulate? Ours is $200-300 per month in winter with NJNG. ~2,700 square feet for 2 stories plus additional finished basement with heating. Gas also fuels gas fireplace, hot water heater, and stove. Usually keep thermostat at 70-71 during the day and 67-68 at night.
