Don't worry, Uber is gonna send a letter to their family, then the driver has to pay his bills

IceColdTear t1_j1oy9ct wrote

Nah, a letter might admit some responsibility. They will just instantly disable both the driver and the passengers account.

He's gonna have serious chronic pain for the rest of his life with a bullet lodge near his spine like that. Poor guy, just damn.

I think it says a lot about the US health care system when people feel the need to rely on a GoFundMe page because medical care is too much $$$. I hope that changes one day.

It's a god-damned travesty. It says we don't value people anymore. Human beings have lost their worth in this country. It's disgusting.

Yes and no. I feel like people immediately set up GFM when things like this happen whether they actually need it or not.

Unless they are rich, they are going to need it. He drives for Uber at 57. Its safe to say they are poor and if they have insurance it’s probably crap. Even if it’s good, they are going to pay they max out of pocket twice probably for 2022 and 2023. Then there is meds and pt and all the copays for dr visits for a year or two. And he’s not working. Who’s going to look after him while he’s getting better? Does she work? How old are the children? Etc. this is the sort of thing that has ongoing effects that cause people to lose all their savings, job, retirement, even homes.

So yes. Sad as it is go fund me. But honestly that 10000 is nowhere near enough money

I'm thinking about the case of the person dying because they set up a GFM page to get insulin but people gave money to a millionaire to be a billionaire even though it was a joke.

Gonna drive for a ride share service you better have cameras facing in all directions.

Bigapple235 t1_j1ppb74 wrote

Uber must have all drivers install cameras in the car in all directions and can upload emergencies to the police.

goofy_grape62 t1_j1pyivi wrote

Why the fuck doesn't Uber step up to the plate and cover this guys medical costs? They are blameless in this case and it's a small amount of money (to them) and it would be good PR for them. Not to mention it would be the RIGHT THING TO DO!

The driver went above and beyond, time for Uber to do the same.

34

DogeSadaharu t1_j1qnvei wrote

Because then they will have to cover all medical costs for past and future incidents.

You think billion dollar companies care about doing the right thing? They wouldn't be worth billions then.

goofy_grape62 t1_j1qv875 wrote

I know they don't care, hence my comment. Corporations show their disdain for humanity every day.

Uber and all rideshare companies aggressively makes it a point to deprive anyone who works for them of any sort of coverage for anything whatsoever.

lol the passenger will probably get a full credit and the driver their account cancelled.

I used to work in claims for State Farm, we were always told that if someone was driving for Uber/Lyft/etc. it was essentially the company’s insurance that would cover it. I’m sure that would apply here. If the culprits ever get caught, that insurance company will probably sue them for damages.

10

jimkay21 t1_j1pmriy wrote

I’m pretty sure my auto insurance excludes coverage when my car is used for any commercial activity (or when it leaves the US)

11

toe_riffic t1_j1pmx04 wrote

Yeah that tracks. I can’t say specifics as these type of claims would go elsewhere in the company to handle.

Baka_Penguin t1_j1px4co wrote

There is an optional Injury Protection insurance for like 0.10$ a trip. Would probably cover an instance like this, but only if the attack happened while on a trip.

Too bad his name wasn't Dwayne Johnson instead.
