I work for a water utility and it’s crazy how unprepared people were for this weather.

We’re in an area that sees cold weather, but not this cold. Average lows might dip down into the teens a couple nights a year, but they’re somewhat rare.

We were seeing windchills near -30F which is just unheard of. Waterlines are bursting left and right. People just didn’t have their homes set up to deal with this level of cold.

The utility’s lines are fine, they’re all buried plenty deep enough to deal with a weekends worth of arctic cold, but the homes in the area aren’t.

I had 4 calls last night myself. The other 2 guys on call had at least as many as I had. I might not have 4 calls in a month lol.

There is a deep disconnect between the city government and the state government in Jackson. Last I heard, the city effectively wanted a blank check to fix it while the state wanted an actual plan before releasing funding as the city has a history of mismanaging funding (see everything that lead to this exact situation as an example)

Memphis had a boil water notice as well, and they always gloat about their tap water. Why do cold temperatures cause a boil water notice when in normal temperatures there’s no pathogens to boil?

There’s no pathogens in a correctly functioning system.

When something breaks — water pressure drops, or a pipe breaks in a freeze, for example — this can allow random outside stuff into the system, and now who knows what’s in your water, until they can get it sealed off, back up to pressure, and flushed through.

It might be fine. It might be lightly contaminated but good enough unless you are immune compromised or get it in your contacts or up your nose. Or it might be more heavily or dangerously contaminated. So they play it safe.

Dude, you are seriously confused.

Wealthiest country = most efficient at taking money from their population and others.

Wealthiest country DOES NOT EQUAL wealthiest average person. The median person in the USA brings in 30k/year and they DO NOT get free healthcare. Everything is out of pocket - insurance and everything, and most insurance companies only pay for 80% of anything, and they only approve the most cost-friendly and barely life-necessary procedures.

On top of that, everyone and their uncle gets to deal with scammers and people trying to cheat the system at everyone else's detriment.

The wealthiest country would be least likely to give their citizens potable water for free. More likely they would rely on citizens being self-sufficient and handing out water to others for free.

The wealthiest country is the country that produces more than 30% of the total world's economic output. It's the country with the richest citizens and the most accrued wealth in the world.

I get that Luxembourg and Singapore have a higher GDP on average, but these nations are not the wealthiest in the world.

Oh for sure, I don’t blame them one bit. Temps dropped 40 degrees over night. It was wild.

And no worries on the rest part. The way our rotation works out, worst case scenario you’ll be out for 2 hours and will have at least 4 hours back home without having to worry about it. Can suck when it’s non-stop, but more or less it’s rare that it’s like that.

Pressure in the pipes forced things to leak OUT, not IN.

If you lose water pressure, you have risk of bacteria moving into the pipes and intermingling until you get appropriate system flushing. So until the system is flushed out, you issue boil orders.

And we havent even talked about the unusually cold weather thats triggered this and the number of homes with burst pipes or maybe the rolling blackouts forced from power generators on the entire region. (Even Memphis which actually has a great water system was forced it issue boil water alerts)

so yeah make this a state or federal political thing when its just Jackson being Jackson wanting everyone else to pay for their fuckups
