It's not implausible. The entire South China Sea is basically a fight over what rock formation technically constitutes an "island" so Japan/Korea/Taiwan/China can claim a wider fishing territory. Think the fight for Pluto, if Pluto being a planet meant a country would gain or lose billions of dollars

My money is on them doing this to lay claim on the islands and the 12 juicy nautical miles of internationally-defined territorial (or a whopping 200 nautical miles of exclusive economical) water rights around those islands.

They say there are actually 100,000 islands. Since we're counting islands with a radius of 100 meters or more this time, there are countless islands with a radius of less than 100 meters.

Countries with oceans around them will defend even small islands to the death. This is because the loss of such an island would reduce the size of their territory. It would be the same in the UK.
