It kinda makes Sense in a backwards kinda way. It can teach kids the stereotype and treat them because fried chicken and watermelon are both amazing.

As much as I like to throw shade on the american education system, this is the fault of the company contracted to handle lunches, not the school itself. And quite frankly, fried chicken, watermelon, and waffles is a fantastic lunch. Bad timing? Maybe, but then again professional offendees likely would have taken issue with this any time of this particular month. Same if they'd tried to serve gumbo, collard greens, cornbread, jambalaya, or any kind of pork.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard a story like this over the years… it almost seems like a fake story at this point.

I eat the shit out of waffles and chicken every time I can and I have watermelon every birthday.

I didn't know "waffles" were a racist food trope.... Besides that, still tone deaf though 🤨

God forbid serving delicious food, should you just serve them the prison slop like normal?

But, I also love fried chicken and watermelon. Am I guilty of appropriation!?!

No they didn't. They just happened to serve it in February and of course the media is eating it up. Like who doesn't like fried chicken and watermelon? I'm white af and I like it.

Let's be honest. We, as the human race, love this kind of food. With that said, it's better served in January or March. People with the best of intentions will fall into this trap for at least another decade. It's black history month and black people love fried chicken, and fuck, I do, too. Let's have it for lunch in February. Oh god I'm fired. Is that it, can we now no longer eat fried chicken or watermelon for 28 days? I'll just eat it quietly by myself.

Yall didn't read the article and it shows. Aramark did this three separate times in the past ten years. NYU ended their contract with them over it. Someone in charge of the menus is racist as fuck and thinks this is hilarious and has managed to keep doing it without consequence. This is not about whether you think fried chicken and watermelon is delicious. It's about context. In the context of Black history month, invoking foods that were historically meant to stereotype and mock ADOS is abhorrent. This wasn't an innocent mistake.

As an African American I've never known watermelon and fried chicken as a staple for the African American diet so I'm wondering where this stereotype came from. I didn't know a lot about black stereotypes until I moved to the south.
