They got swindled twice lmao. Bought it for 200,000 euro in 2003 thinking it was real, found out in 2006 that it wasn’t, and then sold it for fake money in 2014, except they also got a loan shark to pay an “intermediary” 300,000 real euros first. So swindled twice and presumably owe a loan shark 300,000 euro now

They only paid the first 20,000 euro in 2003, then they found out it was fake and didn’t pay the rest.

Slightly wrong. They put a 20k down payment. Then they went to court to get the remaining debt cleared as the original seller couldn't produce a certificate of authentication. Which means the court proved it was a fake, and the brothers cant claim they didnt know it was a fake.

A Netflix original.

Edit: Wait a minute, come to think of it I've also been swindled TWICE in a similar situation! SMH

This is why I stick around this sub. So much non Onion material and reposts here. Then we get a true gem like this. Good job OP.

Since this is the sort thing, that becomes a 'based on real events' movie, all we need now is a fake film company to run making it as a money laundering operation, and for the fake painting to gain real value as a kitsch item for some anonymous millionaire.

Just some friendly advice for any other potential art dealers lurking on reddit. If there's an easily searchable court case declaring that the painting you own is a fake... don't try to sell it as real.

Especially not to people who have the ability to drop 1.7 million francs on art... they tend to Google this shit.

They tend to have people who wouldn’t need to google anything acquire them. But yeah, pretty fuckin dumb. Couldn’t happen to nicer people

Wait so the brothers knew the painting was a forgery, but did the Sheik know? Cause if the Sheik thought it was real and tried to pay for it with fake money, then the Sheik is also a scammer. Either way shouldn't he be in jail for printing Swiss francs?

Like to be able to pass as real money the Sheik had to have a decent printing plate and ink. That seems like a bigger story than just a few bros selling a fake painting. Who gave the Sheik those tools to print legitimate-looking money? Is Switzerland gonna get angry at this dude printing at-will? Is anyone going to do business with a Sheik in the future? Their reputation is tarnished now in terms of doing honest business.

So many questions
