Couldn't they just use renewable energy to power electric heaters? This seems like a stupid solution.

Well bitcoin mining computers are pretty much just electric heaters anyway. It's actually pretty good, because you're using the energy to produce heat anyway, so you might as well get some useful computation out of it as its transformed from electric to thermal
