Our local lumber yard sells their scrap ends of oak for $32/ton, so I just filled the truck up and started chopping. I'm only now getting close to needing another load.

A man that cuts his own wood gets warmed by it 3 times instead of 1. First felling the tree, again cutting and splitting, and again when burning it.

Like Abraham Lincoln used to say: "If you chop your own firewood, it warms you twice."

One time I went to a restaurant in Stockton where on the mantle of the fireplace it said, "He who chops his own wood is twice warmed." There were similar motivational saying on the boards under the slanted ceiling.

Edit: didn't know it was said by Abe Lincoln.

I celebrate it dear redditor. I devoted my entire career on how people gather and use fuelwood. It was our main source of energy for millenia, and will keep going as far as humans exist. Make a few fires outdoors, in the chill of the night and watch the stars move.

We used 5 cords last year. This year we're doing without oil heat because it's been too damn expensive, so it'll be a few cords more. My back already hurts from the 'exercise'. 😉

Boomer here; Dad & his Brothers spent the Great Depression on an off grid farm chopping wood for their Father, a former BC Lumberjack. My Uncle even cut pulp for $ for a time and years later had 18" forearms just like Popeye.

We had a place in the sticks for a few years. We had crappy baseboard heaters but pretty much only used our wood stove for heat. I have a love-hate relationship with chopping and firewood in general! It does feel good to heat your house with wood you chopped.

It warms you twice. Once when you chop it and once when you burn it. Attributed to...most often Thoreau.

I chopped a lot of wood one summer holiday, then went to the Ex and rang the bell twice with hammer.

I always loved splitting firewood. Once, I had 4 very large hybrid poplars cut down by the utility company. They left all of the wood in cut rounds for me.

I spent many Saturday mornings processing it into firewood

This is cool: I had a neighbor who could see me from his property working the wood. He told me; “I have a wood splitter that you could use”. Then he says; “It needs run and you be doing me the favor by using it”. What an awesome neighbor.

But I told him that I work a desk job to pay the bills. And manually splitting wood is very enjoyable to me. 😊

I saw a pic of a young George Foreman training for a fight back in the day. He chopped firewood. He chopped a pile of firewood as big as a large house.

Did that for so many years. Nothing compares to a roaring fire of wood you harvested your self. Live in Florida now.

Hell yeah I love cutting wood. I have three acres of forest to manage.

That's maybe a weeks worth of fuel.

Chopping is only fun if everything goes right. Your saw should cut perfectly, your wood should be dry and ready.

Get a log splitter, but you'll be suprised at how much work you still have to do.
