I just recently found out there's a target downtown. I live less than two miles from downtown. As you can see, I don't get out much
SteelCityIrish t1_j97h5jf wrote
So… finally a “grocery store” downtown? 🤣🤣🤣
ChinaLouise t1_j97hmzb wrote
How long has it been there?
You'll probably say something like "several years" lol
igloojoe11 t1_j97mw9d wrote
It opened last June, I believe.

Target officially opened in the summer of 2022. The building also has a hotel (which opened in 2019) and several floors of apartments. There is still retail space open. Plus, Burlington is moving down the street and a Five Below is coming. New life for this Pittsburgh gem!

Five below is coming downtown? Makes me want to actually cross a bridge

I got a pair of big ass headphones from five below in Robinson thinking if the sound sucks, whatever. They sound fucking great. Just as good as a pair that i actually paid good money for. Fuck. Totally down for five

Yep! The City Paper had a brief mention in July, following the opening of Target.
hineybush t1_j97kodk wrote

It was around June-August of last year

Oh I don’t know, I haven’t been back in 13 years… but I also know there’s been a constant push to try since the 90’s.

There was some kind of food 4 less or save a lot or something like that on the hill, but it was shut down before the pandemic. I think the closest actual grocery store would be either Oakland or south side. And south side isn't what it used to be
SteelCityIrish t1_j97r7tk wrote
Right on. I always assumed the N. Side Giant Eagle was the downtown grocery support.

There was a nice Shop N Save in the Hill District, built at a cost of $8 million. It closed in 2019 due to shoplifting, crime and the general negative effects of locating a nice store in a hostile neighborhood.
tesla3by3 t1_j97v7up wrote
Salem’s is planning to open a store at that site sometime this year.
dorothy_zbornakk t1_j989kmq wrote
that’s not true at all. it closed because the lease holder didn’t pay the property taxes on it. https://www.wtae.com/article/shop-n-save-in-pittsburgh-hill-district-will-close/26432615
tesla3by3 t1_j995p27 wrote
The article says the owner of the property did not pay the property taxes. The leaseholder (SnS owner)was paying the rent as agreed, which includes the property taxes. It was the landlord who never sent the tax payments in.
I’m guessing this enabled the tenant to get out of the lease. If they really wanted to keep the store open they could have worked something out with the landlord.
ChinaLouise t1_j97s4o0 wrote
Ok, so it was a Shop and Save. That's what I was referring to but for some reason though it was a discount grocery
rangel01 t1_j98k680 wrote
There's goona be a new five and below next to it too.
Whywaitwhat t1_j98oy61 wrote
Tbh it's not the worst selection. Prices are about right. 🤷
SteelCityIrish t1_j98r9z7 wrote
I’m not complaining…
I remember N. Side G.E., S.S. G.E., Shop N Save @ Bloomfield Bridge, Center Ave G.E… now it’s been a while, so maybe I am forgetting things… but this was what you had from downtown.
Up to Mt. Wu if you wanted all that noise.
Like was there not a grocery at the lower end of Carson, a la 10th? Seems wild now…
BumperRobinson t1_j99gaxt wrote

We live in as far south as you can get and still be in Allegheny, and my mom and I did make it a point to stop at the downtown target. 😂 She has a lot more memories of everything it was before, and wanted to check it out.
