A cop or delivery truck parked in a lane of traffic is almost, always the reason.

Going into Oakland, that's usually the case. Getting out of Oakland (toward downtown via Fifth) has been a total fucking shitshow of daisy-chained construction projects.

Dodge Nitro on Centre did this and caused a lengthy mess yesterday. Fun to hear all the extra honking from my apartment.

The construction site like one or two blocks up on the right has been receiving 53’ flatbed deliveries all day. Each time, it necessitates blocking the entire road so the truck has space to turn and reverse into the site. Then they block it again when the truck needs to leave. Each time, the road is blocked for several minutes. It sucks, but there’s really not anything else they can do.

Yup, just saw this today (didn't remember to take a picture unfortunately). For some reason, it was like all the cars on the entire road were honking at the same time, which is why I noticed the huge truck in the first place. Like, it was as long as the entire width of Forbes and then some. Took forever for it to turn.

I thought I saw something like that from way back. It was unexpected.

To be fair, traffic in Oakland has been bad for weeks because of all the construction. Crossing Fifth as a pedestrian is downright hazardous in the late afternoon because you can't see the walk sign and the drivers seem to ignore the traffic lights.

If you're in a traffic jam, you _are_ the traffic jam.

I mean, some traffic is expected. People probably are getting out of work early, it’s the day before Thanksgiving. Not a huge deal.

14

catbosspgh OP t1_ixisaxx wrote

For sure. As I realize now that I’m out of it. Definitely worse than usual for a minute.

bryguypgh t1_ixivoh1 wrote

University staff early dismissal probably contributes.

nonymiz t1_ixizzst wrote

While, yeah, there are some employees working, the university is pretty much shut down at the moment due to Thanksgiving recess.

I was at Giant Eagle in a separate part of town this morning (~11) and people trying to turn into the tiny front lot (like assholes) backed up traffic along the main roads for 3-4 blocks (could see it as I escaped back home). Wouldn't be surprised if this is due to a grocery store somewhere in the area

Oakland is pretty much a food desert

UnsurprisingDebris t1_ixithwj wrote

FYI, there's only 1 "s" in desert. Dessert has two, I always remember because I want to eat two desserts.

chuckie512 t1_ixiu0dx wrote

Thanks. I knew that, but I swipe-texted on my phone and didn't proofread well enough I guess lol.

3

UnsurprisingDebris t1_ixiv8mu wrote

Ahhh, that checks out. I too have been the victim of swipe-text grammatical errors a time or two.

Any-Refrigerator6746 t1_ixiqtg3 wrote

According to Google Maps layers traffic is fucked all the way to Atwood from where you're at - that is the spot with restaurants and shit in every direction. Probably just pre-thanksgiving rush goin wild already

catbosspgh OP t1_ixis0mb wrote

I escaped on reflection it was probably a mix of Pitt & construction.-I hope no one was hurt cos I’d feel like an asshole. Honestly I was just feeling sorry for myself cos I ducked out of tunnel monster traffic & immediately sat for ten minutes between Halket & McKee.

Ahhh...the holidays...the time of year when we forget the stresses of the rest of the year. Leisurely shopping for a great dinner from your favorite butcher and baker, strolling down the street to small shops as the snow gently falls on a beautifully decorated shopping street. All is calm. All is bright.

I got stuck on Forbes like this about 4 times over several weeks in the Summer. It was always some crew digging a deep hole right in the middle of one of the lanes. Presumably working on some utility or sewer lines.

When I was in undergrad they would have coach buses parked on bigelow that students would take back to like Philly DC Baltimore. I assume they’re still doing that so that could be why?
