I like the service and staff at Bon Air Animal Hospital. I feel like the prices are fairly average overall. A friend of mine just got a quote for a surgery for his dog for 1,000. Other vets he talked to were saying 2-3000.

+1 for Varina vet, all our cats have been going there for about five years now. We have one with FIV and one with neuro/mobility issues and they’ve always been amazing and provided great care at affordable prices.

Jones Veterinary are great, and every time I'm in there I tell them they need to raise their prices. :)

Dr Jones is a Saint. It can be hard to get a new patient appt there sometimes as they are usually booked up

Work in rescue and do a ton of vets. Best vet out there. Only issue is it can take some time for a booking but that’s because he’s so good and worth the wait.

Yeah I really hope he gets a second doctor one of these days, that's the only drawback of the place.

I go to river city vet on broad across the street from target and have had a great experience. They’ll give you a quote over the phone; most vets probably will if you ask

I second and third and fourth Locke A. Taylor. I could not recommend them enough.

This is my long winded story.

When I first moved to Richmond my dog had a stroke and lost all motor function in her back legs while zooming and playing at a local dog park. In a panic as a new to towner I just took her to the closest vet, which was Cary street veterinary (who sucks and is horribly overpriced) they wanted hundreds of dollars to even diagnose and another couple thousand to operate. I was a broke college kid at the time trying to figure out how to save my dog. But luckily I remembered right as I was loading her into my car to rush her there an older lady stopped me and told me her vet was amazing and I should call them before doing anything. She mentioned Locke A. Taylor. So I listened to her and called them before making any decision. The staff at Locke A Taylor was amazing. The vet talked to me for 30 minutes talking me out of my panic and telling me exactly what to do and not spend thousands of dollars yet and to show up at 5:30am the next morning. I showed up and there was no one at the clinic but the vet no staff just him. He unlocked the door and helped me carry my partially paralyzed dog inside. He went through the full exam and came to the conclusion it was a stroke that basically killed the nerve in her spine causing her to lose function in her back legs. So a couple round of steroids and a few weeks of wheelchair life she was able to have a second chance at fully healthy life. It’s been 7 years since then and my dog can sprint, jump, run up stairs, jump on couches. Love her best dog life ever. It cost me about $500 for everything and even offered to let me pay him whatever I could to take as long as I needed to pay them back. I can’t recommend them enough.

I have since taken multiple dogs, couple small animals (mice, rabbits, even a lizard) there and they’ve always gone above and beyond and been incredibly transparent with me.

TLDR: That vet showed up on his day off before the clinic opened to help a scared college kid get his best friend back.

Bon Air Animal Hospital is absolutely lovely, I had an excellent first experience there when I brought my guinea pigs in. I’ve been to two other vets in the area, Lakeside Animal Hospital & Wellesley— both pricey, but Lakeside has taken care of MANY of my guinea pigs.

If you ever get hit with a big unexpected vet bill, I recommend looking into getting CareCredit, it’s a credit card that offers up to twelve months interest free to use on healthcare needs (and vet procedures). I was able to get one of my pigs surgery because of the card, nonetheless I’m still working on paying it off lmao.

I go to Springfield vet out in Glen Allen. I thought their prices seemed reasonable.

We got fantastic "bedside" manner there. Peak of covid I got extended and thorough questions - it didn't seem like they were trying to get me through the door. I took him one time for an emergency visit because his face swole up like a balloon, and the next day the vet that saw him, who wasn't our normal doctor, called my cell to make sure he was doing fine. That's vet CARE.

Springfield vet clinic in West end. Bonus - if you have a cat Dr Scottish specializes in geriatric feline medicine. His wife also owns Journeys End. Both are fantastic people

Lakeside Animal Hospital gave (or tried to give) sedatives to every pet I have, for things as routine as nail trims. We’ve also been to the Richmond SPCA clinic and to Hanover Green, both which were able to take care of our two dogs and cat without the need for sedatives.

Thoroughly recommend Hanover Green; they have good availability, and their team is so kind and good with our animals. They are pretty reasonably priced too.

Lakeside sucks. I'd take my cat there if I had to, but it would be at the bottom of my list.
